Disconnecting the battery

WARNING: Batteries normally produce explosive gases that can cause injury. Therefore, keep fire, sparks, or flammable substances near the battery. When charging the battery or working near the battery, always protect your face and eyes. Always provide adequate ventilation. Failure to follow these instructions may result in personal injury.

WARNING: Batteries contain sulfuric acid, so avoid contact with skin, eyes and clothing. When working near the battery, wear protective goggles to protect against possible splashes of battery acid. If acid comes into contact with the skin or eyes, immediately flush the affected area with water for at least 15 minutes and seek immediate medical attention. If acid is swallowed, seek medical attention immediately. Failure to follow these instructions may result in personal injury.

WARNING: Do not use audio unit code storage devices when working on the auxiliary restraint system or fuel system. When using these devices, the vehicle's electrical system remains energized, but at a reduced amperage. Failure to follow this instruction may result in injury.

CAUTION: Before disconnecting the wire "masses" battery to prevent damage to the vehicle's electrical system, make sure the engine is not running.

NOTE: Ensure that no data is required from the powertrain control module before disconnecting the battery (PCM), since disconnecting the battery wire will erase all fault codes and idle / driving parameters stored in the volatile memory (KAM). It is not necessary to disconnect or remove the electronic control modules.

NOTE: This procedure should be used to disconnect the battery when performing repairs that require disconnecting the battery.

1. Determine and write down the audio unit code and radio frequency presets.

2. Disconnect the wire "masses" from the battery.

CAUTION: Before connecting the wire "masses" battery to prevent damage to the vehicle's electrical system, ensure that all electrical systems are turned off.

1. Connect the wire "masses" battery.

2. Enter the audio unit code and tune in the radio frequencies.

3. Set the clock to the correct time.

4.
NOTE: If the battery was disconnected and then reconnected, stored in the memory of the powertrain control module (PCM) idling and driving parameters will be erased. In order to allow the PCM to remember the idle and drive parameters, the following steps are required.

Start the engine and let it idle for three minutes.

5. When the engine has warmed up to normal operating temperature, increase the engine speed to 1200 rpm and maintain this speed for approximately two minutes.

6. Drive the vehicle approximately five miles/eight kilometers while changing the driving mode.
