Airbag/Pyrotechnic Seat Belt Tensioner Test and Deployment/Activation Wire 418-S055 (40-007A)

General equipment: Battery, 12 V.

All cars

WARNING: To minimize the risk of injury if the air bag deploys prematurely, always carry the active air bag module with the air bag and trim cover facing away from your torso. Failure to follow this instruction may result in injury.

WARNING: To minimize the possibility of premature air bag deployment, operating air bag modules should only be installed on grounded workbenches. Failure to follow this instruction may result in injury.

1. Disconnect the ground cable from the battery. For additional information, refer to Section 414-01.

2. Remove the air bag module(s) to be deployed. For more information, refer to the appropriate procedure(s) provided in this section.

Single stage airbag modules

3. Connect the test wire to the air bag module and adapter (driver air bag module shown).

Dual stage airbag modules

4.
CAUTION: Do not connect both test leads to the adapter. The two air bag module inflators must be deployed separately.

Connect the two test leads to the airbag module and the other end of one of the test leads to the adapter (driver airbag module shown).

All airbag modules

5.
CAUTION: To prevent damage to the test lead connector(s) when deploying the air bag, support the air bag module on two wooden blocks.

Install the air bag module in a suitable rigid wire frame with the air bag module cover facing up.

6. Connect the deployment wire to the adapter.

7.
WARNING: Before proceeding further, ensure that all personnel in the vicinity are aware of the impending loud noise (bang). Do not allow anyone to approach within six metres. Failure to follow these instructions may result in injury.

Move as far away from the airbag module as possible and connect the deployment wire to the battery.

8.
CAUTION: Do not touch the air bag module immediately after deployment because the air bag module will be very hot.

CAUTION: After an air bag has deployed, traces of sodium hydroxide, a combustion product that is irritating to the skin, may remain on the air bag surface. Wear protective gloves when handling any deployed air bag modules.

To deploy the airbag, press both switches.

Dual stage airbag modules

9. Connect the second test lead to the adapter.

10.
