Warning: Handle the air bag with extreme caution so that the cover is not directed toward you. If you have any doubts about the air bag or its control circuit, contact your dealer.
Warning: Place the airbag with the lid facing up. Note that the airbag should not be exposed to temperatures above 100°C.
Do not attempt to open or repair the airbag or interfere with the electrical part of the system. A damaged airbag (especially as a result of improper handling) must not be used.
Driver's airbag unit
1. Disconnect the negative battery cable (chapter 5 paragraph 1).
Warning: As a precaution, wait at least 15 minutes in case of accidental airbag deployment. This time is necessary for the capacitor charge to dissipate.
2. Turn the steering wheel so that one of the holes in which the mounting bolt is installed is located above the upper steering column cover.
3. Remove the mounting bolt. Then turn the steering wheel one turn and remove the remaining bolts (see Fig. 28.3).

4. Carefully pull the airbag assembly out of the steering wheel until the electrical connector can be disconnected. Then remove the airbag assembly (See Fig. 28.4).

5. Installation - in the reverse order of removal.
Front seat passenger airbag unit
6. Disconnect the negative battery cable (chapter 5A).

7. Remove the glove box (chapter 11).
Models produced before 1996
8. Remove the three screws from the panel located behind the glove box. Remove the panel.
9. Remove the screw securing the end of the ventilation duct and disconnect the duct from the front panel and deflector.
10. Disconnect the two airbag inflator wiring connectors, noting their positions.
11. While supporting the cushion assembly, remove the four screws securing it and remove the assembly.
12. Installation - in the reverse order of removal.
Models produced since 1997
13. Remove the three screws from the panel behind the glove box, then remove the retainer on its right side. Remove the panel. Disconnect the bulb holder.
14. Carefully trim the wiring harness connections at the top of the glove box opening.
15. Remove the audio unit (paragraph 23).
16. Inside the opening for the audio unit, unscrew the screws securing the ventilation duct on the passenger side to the front panel deflector.
17. Disconnect the air duct from the deflector and remove the deflector from the front panel.
18. Disconnect the electrical connector of the wiring at the end of the airbag.
19. While supporting the cushion assembly, remove the four screws securing it and remove the assembly.
20. Installation - in the reverse order of removal.
Side Airbag Unit
21. These units are built into the front seats. Removing them requires removing the upholstery. Therefore, such work should be ordered from dealers.
