Removal
Disconnect the negative (-) battery cable.
Caution: When the battery is disconnected, the contents of electronic memory devices, such as engine fault codes or radio codes, are erased. Before disconnecting, also read the instructions in the chapter "Removal and installation the battery".
Open the back door.
Model with a gently sloping rear part of the body: unscrew the bolts securing the "arrow" trim and remove the trim.
TURNIER: unscrew the "arrow" bolts securing the trim and inner trim of the rear window glass. Remove the trim and trim.
Disconnect the wires of the rear window heating/antenna, locking magnet, central locking system and disconnect the multi-pin connector of the luggage compartment security system. To facilitate subsequent assembly, mark the wires with adhesive tape in advance.
Securely tie a strong cord to the end of each wire harness. Remove the rubber inserts from the rear door and pull the wire harnesses out of the trunk door so that the cords remain visible.
Untie the cords from the wiring harnesses. The cords should remain in the tailgate to facilitate subsequent installation.
Prop up the back door with a suitable board or wooden stand.
Remove both spring-gas struts. To do this, use a screwdriver to press and turn the locking bracket outward. Remove the spring-gas struts from the spherical pins.
Lower the rear door so that it rests on the rubber seal.
Caution: Do not lock the rear door.
Remove the hinge covers from the roof trim in the passenger compartment.
Loosen the hinge mounting nuts and remove them together with the washers.
With the help of an assistant, lift the rear door and place it on a clean, soft surface so as not to damage any parts.
Installation
Together with an assistant, position the rear door so that the hinge pins fit into the holes.
Caution: Place the door carefully to avoid scratching the paintwork.
Press both spring-gas stops onto the spherical pins and secure with locking clamps.
Note: The rear door must be additionally held by an assistant until the door hinge mounting nuts are tightened.
Place the door hinge mounting nuts together with the washers and tighten by hand.
Tie the cords in the rear door to the wire harnesses and carefully pull the harnesses through the door.
Note: It is possible that the wire harnesses will get stuck when pulled into the door. In this case, pull the wire harness back a little and try to pull it through the door again. If, despite this, the wire harness cannot be pulled through, it should be pulled out of the door again and the plug should be attached to the wire harness or cord with adhesive tape.
Install rubber inserts.
Carefully close the rear door and check that the gap between the door and adjacent parts at the top and sides is uniform and even.
Tighten the hinge mounting nuts to a torque of 25 Nm. Close the hinges with covers.
Connect the battery ground (-) cable.
If available, set the clock and enter the radio theft protection code.
