Ford Mondeo cars are equipped with starters from Bosch.
The starter is a DC electric motor with excitation from permanent magnets, with a planetary gearbox and an electromagnetic two-winding traction relay.
Covers 1 (Fig. 10.7), 10 and housing 16 of the starter are pulled together by two studs. Rotor 17 of the starter rotates in two metal-ceramic inserts installed in cover 10 and support of planetary gear 18. Four permanent magnets are fixed in the stator housing.
Rotation from the anchor shaft is transmitted to the drive shaft via a planetary gearbox, which consists of a crown gear, three satellites, a carrier, and a pinion with internal engagement. The satellites rotate on needle bearings.
When the starter is turned on, the voltage from the storage battery is supplied to both windings of the starter traction relay (pull-in and holding) via the ignition switch (lock). Under the influence of the magnetic field of the windings, the anchor 4 of the relay is pulled in and, with the lever 3, engages the gear with the engine flywheel. After the contact bolts of the plate are closed, the pull-in winding is disconnected and the anchor 4 of the relay is held in the pulled-in state only by the holding winding.
When the key in the ignition switch (lock) is turned to position "II", the holding winding is de-energized and the anchor, under the action of spring 6, returns to its original position, using lever 3 to disengage clutch gear 19 from engagement with the flywheel.
USEFUL TIP: To avoid many starter malfunctions, follow a number of simple rules when using it: - when starting the engine, turn on the starter for no more than 10-15 seconds and again after 20-30 seconds. Continuous long-term operation of the starter can lead to overheating. If the engine does not start after three attempts, then you should check and eliminate faults in the engine power supply system or in the ignition system;
USEFUL TIP: – after starting the engine, immediately switch off the starter, as prolonged rotation of the flywheel of the drive pinion may damage the starter overrunning clutch;
USEFUL TIP: – Do not move the car using the starter, as this will cause significant overload and damage to it.
