NOTE: Removal and installation of the alternator are shown using a vehicle with a 1.6L Duratec engine as an example. On vehicles with other engines, the work is performed similarly, although the location of the alternator may differ.
1. Disconnect the wire from the negative terminal of the battery.
2. Remove the accessory drive belt (see Checking and replacing the accessory drive belt).
3. Remove the right headlight (see Headlight Replacement).

4. Remove the protective cap…

5….unscrew the nut…

6….and remove the terminal from the generator"s positive terminal.

7. Press the lock and disconnect the wiring harness connector from the generator terminals.

8. Loosen the nut and remove the bolt securing the generator to the cylinder head.

9. Remove the lower generator mounting bolt.

10. Remove the generator from the stud and pull it out through the headlight opening.
11. Install the generator and all previously removed parts in reverse order.
NOTE: The accessory drive belts and the power steering pump of Duratec engines cannot be reused even after removal without damage, as they are designed for one-time stretching only when put on the pulleys (the belt tension cannot be adjusted). When installing the alternator, replace the specified belts with new ones.
