Five-speed manual transmission

            0

As standard, the Mondeo transfers its engine power to the drive wheels via «manually» switchable five-speed gearbox (MTX-75). MTX-75-Gearbox is «old acquaintances» from the stock of Ford units: it is also used, for example, by powerful Focus variants. Mondeo 2001 «switches and controls», of course, a thoroughly modified version of the MTX-75. She, for example, has
  • new external gearshift gates,
  • an output shaft of a different design - the small gear here is a solid part of the shaft,
  • gearbox housing matched to the new engine.

As before, the MTX-75 gearbox works as a two-shaft design: the letter M stands for «manual», T - gearbox, X - front-wheel drive, and the number 75 characterizes the distance in millimeters between the drive and driven shafts.

In the neutral position, none of the drive wheels is in contact with the drive or driven shaft: no torque is transmitted to the differential. Only one tapered roller bearing locates the drive and driven shafts on the clutch and gearbox sides of the respective gearbox housing halves. The small gear of the driven shaft is in constant engagement with the differential spur gear - this is a part of the driven shaft. Transmission gears - 1/3 gear and synchronizer clutch - 1/3 gear are located on the drive shaft. Gearing for gears 1, 2 and reverse are parts of the driven shaft. Transfer gears 1/2/5 and reverse are located on the driven shaft. The gear for 3rd and 4th gears, as well as the small gear of the input shaft, are parts of the output shaft. Gears 1-3 are dual synced. It consists of an inner synchronizing ring, a taper ring, an outer synchronizing ring and a synchronizer housing. The gear wheel does not have a conical surface: synchronization is performed using synchronizing rings and a tapered ring connected by a kinematic closure to the gear wheel. In addition, the reverse is also synchronized.

Dual sync is standard for the first three gears

Gearbox repair - in case of doubt, an option for a master

Mondeo gearboxes work with different gear ratios to suit different engine options. According to practice, the automotive life of MTX-75 boxes is quite long. If you think that you have an exception to this rule, then it is better to go to a specialized workshop, since they use a special tool and require the appropriate competence and experience. If not, then there is no reason for false shame: many workshops send gearboxes to be repaired, as a rule, to their manufacturers for revision on the stands or immediately replace them with exchange units.

TECHNICAL DICTIONARY

How does a manual transmission work?

Engine power is transmitted through the clutch to the drive shaft (input shaft) manual transmission. On this shaft are five gears with oblique teeth (plus one gear for reverse). All transmission gears have a suitable partner on the driven shaft and they are in constant contact with each other.

Gears and shafts

Until the moment when the gears come into contact with their partner, they rotate freely. As soon as the gear is engaged, the corresponding pair of gears is connected to each other in a power circuit. Gear shift lever by means of cable pulls, «balancers» and the rod acts on the shift fork. It connects the transmission wheels by force to each other using a movable sleeve. In order for both wheels to quickly and silently find each other during the shifting process, the synchronizing rings lead this «a couple» to the same speeds: they «slow down» to do this, in the starting cone, a faster gear until the tooth profiles of the gear wheels come into silent contact and slide one into the other.

Separate transfers

The first three gears shift the engine speed to a slower one. Starting from the fourth gear, the drive wheels rotate already «faster» than an engine. The experts here are talking about a long transfer gearbox that deliberately maintains stable torque in the new Ford engines. In fifth gear, the difference between the engine and drive speeds increases even more: this spares the engine, «without tightening the noose around his neck», and reduces, mainly over long distances, fuel consumption. On all forward gears, the gap is formed by two gears. Only the reverse gear uses three gears. The third gear, also called the intermediate gear, rotates on its own shaft, it becomes active when the driven shaft needs to change the direction of rotation for reverse gear.

Short cut: power flow in first gear.
