The CD4E automatic gearboxes, like all manual gearboxes in the Mondeo, are supplied with long-life oil. However, after extreme use of the car, for example, in a hard mode or driving in mountainous terrain, a small oil consumption occurs. After such "walks", check the oil level - and subsequently after 45,000 kilometers. For this, your Mondeo has a corresponding dipstick, located in the engine compartment between the engine and the gearbox (on the left relative to the direction of travel).
Before using this dipstick, please note the following important instructions:
If your Mondeo has been towing a trailer or in hot weather in the mountains, give the transmission oil about half an hour to cool down to 60–70°C. This is the oil temperature at which you can accurately measure its level.

ORDER OF EXECUTION |
- Drive approximately 30 km to allow the transmission oil to warm up sufficiently, then park the vehicle on a level surface.
- Start the engine and cycle through all the gearshift positions. Wait for each gearshift until the transmission actually shifts.
- Now set the lever to position P, set the handbrake and start the engine at idle speed.
- Clean the dipstick cover and remove it completely.
- Rinse the dipstick with a lint-free cloth and then insert it into the guide tube until it stops.
- Pull out the dipstick and check the oil level. At oil temperatures of 60–70°C, the level should be in the shaded area of the dipstick. If this is not the case, add the missing volume using a suitable funnel through the dipstick hole. It is better to stop the engine for this procedure, otherwise ATF oil may spill out of the funnel back. The difference between the "MIN" and "MAX" marks is approximately 0.4 liters.
- Check the "corrected" oil level with the engine running.

Features when handling the CD4E automatic transmission
After repairing the gearbox, never start the engine if the gearbox is not ventilated - its insides must be dry. If the battery of your automatic transmission "goes on strike", it is not so easy to move or drag the car: the hydraulic torque converter does not provide a connection between the engine and the gearbox when the engine is stopped. Actions in this situation: you have a wire on board to connect the starter to an auxiliary battery, so ask another driver for help. Towing – first set the gearshift lever to the "N" position
If you need to tow your Mondeo, be sure to set the gearshift lever to the "N" position and tell the front driver to drive at a speed below 50 km/h. Never tow a faulty Mondeo with an automatic gearbox in reverse, only in forward gear. When driving forward, complete this process after a maximum of 50 km, otherwise the "insides" of the gearbox may "be offended" by you, they can only work dry, this happens, for example, when the oil level has not yet been adjusted after a gearbox repair or new oil has been added. |
