The joint cuffs are designed today in such a way that their service life is not inferior to the service life of the drive shafts. However, external damage, for example from sharp hard stones, can "bring death to them". Ford or a well-equipped car shop offers experienced amateurs a corresponding repair kit, which can be assembled relatively easily on your own.
Dismantling
|
ORDER OF EXECUTION |
- Remove the drive shaft as described above.
- To remove the inner joint, first secure the drive shaft in a vice with protective jaws.
- "Tear" the pressure tape and dispose of it.
- Slide the seal back and discard the old grease.
- Now remove the joint star (indicated by the arrow).
Release the retaining ring and remove the joint star (indicated by the arrow). |
- 6 Remove the old cuff and replace with a new one.
7 Since the outer constant velocity joint is pressed in, do not try to disassemble it, but...
8..."tear" the pressure bands (indicated by the arrow), move the cuff back, dispose of the old grease and then remove the cuff.
"Tear" the pressure tapes (indicated by the arrow) and remove the cuff. |

Mounting the outer hinge
Do not over-tighten the joint – see Removing and installing the drive shaft/wishbone.
|
ORDER OF EXECUTION |
- Fit a new outer joint seal and fill it with a maximum of 55g of grease (Ford MIC 230 – AA).
- To remove air, place a screwdriver under the seal seat.
- Before tightening the new clamping bands, align the collar with the marks on the shaft.

Mounting the inner hinge
|
ORDER OF EXECUTION |
- The correct position for installing the cuff is determined by the specified distance between the inner and outer cuffs.
- Align the seal with the shaft. The internal distance between the seals is 180 mm (Duratec-HE), 160 mm (left drive shaft, Mondeo with automatic transmission), 165.5 mm (Duratec-VE, DuraTorg).
- Install the internal pressure strip.
- Now fit the joint star and install the new retaining ring.
Duratec-HE
- Fill the joint with a maximum of 155 g of grease (Ford USD MIC 230-A).
Duratec-VE/Duratorg-DI
- Fill the joint with a maximum of 165 g of grease (Ford USD MIC 230-A).
- Mount the joint housing on the drive shaft and move it back 20 mm 2. To remove air, place a screwdriver under the seal seat 1.
- In this position, now mount the pressure tape.
- Install the drive shaft as described above.

PRACTICAL ADVICE |
Massage the lubricant well Before finally fixing the clamp, massage the new grease well. To do this, remember the "accordion" of the cuff and carefully move the hinge: the grease will be evenly distributed in the cuff and around the hinge. Make sure that the cuff is located on the drive shaft without "wrinkles". |
