Replacing the cuffs of the cardan joint

Joint seals today are designed in such a way that their service life is not inferior to the service life of the drive shafts. However, external injury, such as from sharp, hard stones, can «bring them death». Ford or a well-equipped auto shop offers experienced hobbyists an appropriate repair kit that can be assembled relatively easily on their own.


Dismantling


PROCEDURE
  1. Remove the drive shaft as described above.
  2. To dismantle the inner joint, first secure the drive shaft in a vise with protective jaws.
  3. «Rip» pressure tape and discard it.
  4. Slide the seal back and discard the old grease.
  5. Remove the sprocket now (arrow).


    Release the safety ring and remove the hinge star (arrow).
  6. 6 Remove the old cuff and replace with a new one.

    7 Since the outer CV joint is pressed in, do not try to disassemble it, but...



    8... «tear apart» pressure tapes (indicated by an arrow), slide the seal back, discard the old grease, and then remove the seal.


    «Rip» pressure tapes (indicated by an arrow) and remove the cuff.

Mounting the external hinge


Do not twist the joint - see Removing and installing the drive shaft / control arm.

PROCEDURE
  1. Fit a new outer joint seal and fill it with a maximum of 55 g of grease (Ford MIC 230 – AA).
  2. To remove air, place a screwdriver under the cuff seat.
  3. Before tightening new clamping bands, align the collar with the marks on the shaft.

Mounting the inner hinge


PROCEDURE
  1. The correct position for installing the cuff is determined by the specified distance between the inner and outer cuffs.
  2. Align the collar with the shaft. The inner distance between the cuffs is 180 mm (Duratec-HE), 160 mm (left drive shaft, Mondeo with automatic transmission), 165.5 mm (Duratec-VE, DuraTorg).
  3. Mount the inner pressure strip.
  4. Now mount the hinge star and install a new retaining ring.

    Duratec-HE

  5. Pour a maximum of 155 g of lubricant into the joint (Ford USD MIC 230-A).

    Duratec-VE/Duratorg-DI

  6. Pour a maximum of 165 g of lubricant into the joint (Ford USD MIC 230-A).
  7. Mount the pivot housing on the drive shaft and slide back 20 mm 2. To bleed air, place a screwdriver under the seal seat 1.


    «Installation» hinge.
  8. In this position, now mount the pressure band.
  9. Mount the drive shaft as described above.


PRACTICAL ADVICE

Fine «massage» lubricant


Before finally fixing the clamping collar, massage the new grease well. For this remember «harmonica» cuffs and at the same time carefully move the hinge: the lubricant will be evenly distributed in the cuff and around the hinge. Make sure that the seal is located on the drive shaft without «wrinkles».
