Replacing drive belts

In Mondeo engines, an automatic belt tensioner keeps the V-ribbed belts in tension. Thus, you no longer have to worry about belt tension. However, the pinch rollers should be inspected from time to time. If at the same time you do not notice in «resting state» nothing unusual, then start the engine and pay attention to the movement of the pressure roller: if you turn on «major consumer», for example, air conditioning, rear window heating, etc., then a working roller is slightly «swinging» - however, even when the engine is given a strong «gas push». Severe belt wear (unevenly deep furrows) continuously causes the pressure roller to vibrate. To eliminate these shortcomings, the drive belt must first be replaced. Make sure the new belt has the same specification as the old one.

This work is described below using the Duratec-HE engine as an example.

PROCEDURE

Set the handbrake and jack up the front of the vehicle securely. Remove the front protective wall of the drive belt. Loosen roller 7 and... ...remove the worn belt. Check all belt pulleys for wear and proper rotation. Lay the new belt in the pulleys and securely tighten the clamping screw on the pressure roller (approx. 5–6 Nm). Winding roads: the drive belt in the Duratec-HE engine. 1 - Generator, 2 - Swivel roller, 3 - Power steering pump, 4 - Water pump, 5 - AC compressor, 6 - Vibration damper of the crankshaft, 7 - Automatic belt tensioner.
