Checking the wishbone bearing (Mondeo 3)

Complete Replacement Only: L-Arm

The two bearings and the ball joint of the front wishbone are maintenance-free. The outer ball joint is located in a plastic cup filled with long-term grease. However, the wishbone should be regularly inspected and the gap should be "squeezed out" with a crowbar: dirt and moisture that has penetrated leave traces, they act as an abrasive paste. The consequences are: the joints are knocked out and the bearings corrode.

ORDER OF EXECUTION

Turn the steering gear all the way to the right and left. Visually inspect both ball joints for damage by installing a mounting lever and checking the clearance. Check both joints in the same way and consider that the joints initially had (should have) a certain elasticity. As soon as the mounting lever turns "without resistance", the joints and thus the entire transverse arm can be sent to scrap metal.

As an experienced amateur, you should immediately think about such self-help at first. However, we consider it advisable to advise you against it: this work does not end with replacing the wishbone: after the repair, it is necessary to measure the entire front axle. Therefore, it is better to contact a specialized workshop from the very beginning.
