Mondeo wheels spin with maintenance-free double row ball bearings. Modern rear axle bearings today can last about 150,000 km. The wheel bearings of the front axle are naturally loaded more than the rear ones, so they do not have such a long service life. Wheel bearings in Mondeo are installed during assembly, if they are damaged, only a complete replacement is needed here. The upcoming repair makes itself felt in a timely manner: worn bearings become «conspicuous» extreme noise from rotation. Cracking noises when turning right clearly indicate a defective front left bearing. Noises when turning left, respectively, on the right wheel bearing. Hand over the job of replacement to a workshop - bearing, impeller, hub and steering knuckle are manufactured to very high tolerances. Proper installation requires the use of special tools. However, before you visit the workshop, do the following test:
- Park the car on asphalt or stone pavement. Grab the wheel at the top and try to move it rhythmically across the longitudinal axis of the car. A defect-free bearing handles this silently and without play.
- If, during this check, there is a large gap on the front wheel bearings, ask the assistant to apply the brake - you are at this time «swing» on the respective wheel. If the gap still exists after this, find the defective axle joint.
