Replacing the parking brake cable

PROCEDURE
  1. Place the vehicle securely on jack stands or raise it completely.
  2. Release the parking brake lever.
  3. Remove the exhaust system - as described above - and then remove the heat shield (screws are indicated by arrows) under the car.


    Dismantle the exhaust system and remove the heat shield (screws are indicated by arrows).
  4. Then dismantle the mounting lining on the rod and...
  5. ... hang the handbrake cable - as described above - on the brake caliper.
  6. Now release the cable from the cable balancer (indicated by an arrow).
  7. Then hang the handbrake cable on the bottom. To do this, squeeze both locking tabs 1 and hang the cable 1 on the bottom.
  8. Now you can completely remove the cable from the bottom of the car (see arrows).


    Release the parking brake cable (places are indicated by arrows) from a cable balancer.

  9. Before installing a new cable, tension the adjusting mechanism in the disc brake calipers.
  10. Hang the new cable and complete the installation in reverse order.
  11. For the basic adjustment of the new cable, pull the brake lever several times until it stops. This activates a self-adjusting mechanism that sets the pretensioned rods and equalizes their lengths.
  12. Check the stroke of the lever, the brake linings should fit easily on the brake discs from about the fourth stop, and then the discs from the seventh «prong» should be blocked.
  13. Take a short test drive. During this trip, apply the handbrake carefully and observe the braking effect on both rear wheels evenly.
  14. If the braking action is uneven, check the lengths of the cables and adjust them again.
