Bleeding the brake system (Mondeo 3)

Air in the brake system "turns" any brake into an "air pump", so in this situation, urgently bleed the brake system. For example, after performing any work that involved removing the brake hoses or opening the brake pipes. Often it is enough to bleed only the brake circuit that was worked on. For SAFETY reasons, however, it is better to bleed both circuits. In this case, ALWAYS use new brake fluid (DOT4 ESD specification - M6C57A) and a clean transparent plastic hose (windshield washer system, aquarium aeration system). In addition, you should have an assistant. Park your Mondeo on a level surface. During the entire bleeding process, keep the contents of the expansion tank at the "MAX" mark. In no case should the brake fluid level drop below the "MIN" mark. If this happens, a new portion of air will enter the system through the top-up hole.

Be careful that the brake fluid does not get on the paintwork. Otherwise, quickly wash the area with clean water, because the varnish becomes "false" or even dissolves.


Height difference X: there should be approximately 30 cm between the purge tank and the air valve. If the tank is at the appropriate height, the air valve is under fluid pressure, so that air will no longer penetrate the brake system through the threads.



ORDER OF EXECUTION
  1. Disconnect the battery cable and raise the vehicle on level ground.
  2. Start the bleeding process at the air valve that is furthest away from the master cylinder.
  3. Insert the bleed hose onto the air valve and...
  4. ...insert the other end of the hose into the reservoir with a small amount of brake fluid.

  5. Open the valve about half a turn.
  6. Have an assistant slowly pump the brake pedal until fluid with air bubbles flows into the reservoir. Make sure there is brake fluid left in the expansion tank.
  7. If there are no more air bubbles and only brake fluid is coming out, have an assistant hold the pedal in the lowest position while you close the air valve.
  8. Repeat this process with all the valves and then close their protective covers.
  9. Check the brake fluid level in the expansion tank and top it up to the upper mark.
  10. Place the car on its wheels and complete the work in reverse order.

Brake fluid


The main components of brake fluid are polyglycol and polyglycol ether. This mixture remains quite liquid at a temperature of -40°C and has a very high boiling point of about 290°C. Its composition already speaks for itself: brake fluid is hygroscopic - it readily "absorbs water" from the air through the sealing cap of the expansion tank.
This is about 2% per year. If the water content is only 2.5 percent, the boiling point will drop to 150°C. In this case, with very hot brakes (driving in mountainous terrain, full braking, driving with a trailer), steam bubbles may form in the brake fluid. Steam bubbles have the same effect as air in the brake system - the brake pedal may "fall through", sometimes it seems that it is sinking into emptiness. Therefore - for your own safety - replace the brake fluid at intervals of two years. If your Mondeo regularly appears in the Ford workshop, this procedure is carried out automatically.

Disposal as special waste – old brake fluid


Brake fluid is poisonous. Therefore, avoid contact with your lips or open wounds. Brake fluid is almost non-corrosive to metal or rubber, but it is aggressive to car paint. Brake fluid that has been drained from the system must be disposed of in each case. In addition, do not use brake fluid from containers that have been open for a long time. Used brake fluid is classified as special waste, so dispose of this "poisonous juice" properly.
