Measuring the wear of disc brake pads (Mondeo 3)

            0

The front segments of the disc brake drives wear out faster than their rear representatives. Check, under normal driving conditions, every 20,000 km of the linings - or once a year as standard. If the linings, including their bearing plates, have become thinner than six millimeters, immediately sacrifice new brake elements to the bridge.

ORDER OF EXECUTION
  1. To properly check the condition of the linings, it is necessary to remove the corresponding wheel.
  2. Take a 1.5mm thick plate and insert it between the disc and the pad holder. If the pad is the same thickness as the plate, then all segments on the corresponding bridge must be replaced.

PRACTICAL ADVICE

Brake pedal and brake shoe linings

In principle, it is not possible to determine the wear of the linings using this test. In free-running brake calipers, the elasticity of the brake piston linings and the standard wobble (0.05 mm) of the brake disc are sufficient to automatically press the lining out of the brake disc after each braking process. When the pedal is not pressed, the basic position of the linings relative to the brake disc and the brake pedal travel remain constant – at least until the linings are completely worn out.

Check the idle travel of the brake pedal with your hand while the engine is running; it should be, at most, a third of the full travel.

If the pedal travel has increased significantly, this is due to worn out - or possibly jammed in the calipers - brake pads, sometimes the disc brake caliper itself is also "jammed". Of course, you can reduce the pedal travel after repeated pumping so that less air "appears" in the system: however, uncover the cause, eliminate the malfunction and bleed the brake system as described below.
