General information about the car (Focus 2)

The Ford Focus II was first presented in September 2004 at the Paris Motor Show. The Russian plant of the concern in Vsevolozhsk (a suburb of St. Petersburg) began to assemble this model of car in the summer of 2005.

For the Russian market, Ford Focus II cars are equipped with the following engines: 1.4 l R4 16V (80 hp); 1.6 l R4 16V (100 hp); 1.6L R4 16V Duratec Ti-VCT with variable valve timing (115 hp); 1.8L R4 Duratec HE 16V (125hp); 2.0L R4 16V (145hp) and Duratorq 1.8L R4 16V turbodiesel (115hp). This book describes only the 1.6L R4 16V Duratec Ti-VCT engine, which has much in common with the other engines, but is the most complex in design.

The cars are equipped with either a five-speed manual transmission (one of two models: IB5 or MTX75), or a six-speed manual transmission MMT6, or a four-speed automatic transmission (only for cars with engines with a working volume of 1.6 and 2.0 liters).

Ford Focus II cars are produced with four body styles: five- or three-door hatchback (start of production - August 2005), sedan and station wagon (Ford Focus II Wagon). In Russia, the car is offered in four basic configurations:



– Ambiente (driver airbag, pyrotechnic seat belt pretensioners with tension limiters for front seats, electric front windows, central locking and immobilizer, steering column adjustable for reach and angle, heater with air recirculation mode);

– Comfort (in addition to the Ambiente package, air conditioning, aluminum trim on the interior door handles, side moldings and exterior door handles painted in body color, and a chromed radiator grille trim are installed);

– Trend (in addition to the equipment of the Comfort package, dark headlight bezels, fog lights, an on-board computer are additionally installed, and the interior is improved);

– Ghia (compared to the Trend package, the interior is additionally trimmed with aluminum and leather, the central lock is equipped with remote control, and the glove compartment is individually cooled, electric windows are installed on all doors, a full set of airbags, including side ones, an additional interior light for rear passengers, a system for delaying the switching off of headlights when leaving the car, side rear-view mirrors with electric drive and electric heating, an improved interior, etc.).

By special order, the car can be equipped with an anti-lock braking system (ABS) with an electronic brake force distribution system (EBD), a dynamic stabilization system (ESP), separate climate control, xenon headlights, parking sensors, an audio system with a multifunctional touch screen (there are 6 audio system options to choose from), alloy wheels (three options), and the ability to install voice control for a mobile phone.



The equipment of cars for the Russian market includes engine and sill protection, mudguards for all wheels and a full-size spare wheel.

Since spring 2006, sales of the imported sports version of the Focus ST (hatchback only) with a forced 2.5 L R5 20V engine equipped with a turbocharger (225 hp, 320 Nm), a six-speed manual transmission have also begun in Russia. In addition, this modification is distinguished by 18-inch alloy wheels, metallic interior trim and a sports suspension.

The bodies of all Ford Focus II modifications are load-bearing, all-metal, welded construction with hinged front fenders, doors, hood and trunk lid (tailgate). The windshield and rear glass (tailgate glass) are glued. The driver's seat is adjustable in the longitudinal direction, by the tilt of the backrest and height, the front passenger seat - in the longitudinal direction and by the tilt of the backrest. The front and rear seats are equipped with height-adjustable headrests. The backrest of the rear seat can be folded forward in parts in a ratio of 40:60.

The transmission is front-wheel drive with front wheel drives equipped with constant velocity joints. In the basic configurations, the cars are equipped with a mechanical five-speed gearbox. Upon request, a four-speed automatic gearbox can be installed on cars with 1.6-liter engines.

Front suspension is MacPherson type, independent, spring, with anti-roll bar, with hydraulic shock absorbers. Rear suspension is semi-independent, spring, with hydraulic shock absorbers.



The front brakes are disc, ventilated, with a floating caliper, the rear ones are drum, with an automatic adjustment device for gaps between the brake shoes and drums. The brake system is equipped with a vacuum booster. An anti-lock braking system (ABS) with an electronic stabilization subsystem (ESP) can be installed upon request.

The steering is trauma-safe, with a rack-and-pinion steering mechanism; some cars are equipped with a hydraulic booster. The steering column is adjustable in reach and tilt. The steering wheel hub contains a front airbag.

All vehicles are equipped with inertia-reel diagonal seat belts for the driver, front passenger, and outer rear seat occupants. A lap belt is provided for the middle rear seat occupant.

The overall dimensions of the car with a five-door hatchback body are shown in Fig. 1.1 (the overall dimensions of the cars with a three-door hatchback body are similar), with sedan and station wagon bodies are given in Appendix 2. The technical characteristics of the cars are given in Table 1.1. The elements of the car with a 1.6 l Duratec Ti-VCT engine, located in the engine compartment, and the main units are shown in Fig. 1.2, 1.3, 1.4.
