Withdrawal


1.
NOTE: TRW shown, Wuefrath similar.


Remove the steering gear. See Section 211-02 for more information.

2.
NOTE: Note the number of turns required to remove the tie rod end.


Remove the tie rod end and locknut.
  • 1. Remove the tie rod end.
  • 2. Turn away a counternut of a tip of steering draft.



3. Remove the cover.
  • 1. Remove clips.
  • 2. Remove the cover.
  • Disconnect the breather tube (in the presence of).



4. Turn the gear to expose the rack and pinion teeth.

CAUTION: To apply the considerable force required to remove the tie rod, clamp the rack in a suitable vise. Do not pinch the steering box.


CAUTION: Use vise jaw protectors.


NOTE: To facilitate removal of the tie rod, it may be necessary to secure the rack together with the steering gear in a vertical position.


Secure the steering gear in a suitable vise. Using a suitable pipe wrench, remove the tie rod.



Installation


1.
NOTE: Remove all traces of thread locking compound from the rail.


Install the tie rod using the special tool.
  • Apply thread locking compound to the female threads of the new tie rod.



2.
NOTE: Install the cover. Use new clips.



Install the cover.
  • 1. Install the cover.
  • 2. Install clamps.
  • Connect the breather tube (in the presence of).



3.
NOTE: Make sure the tie rod end is screwed in the same number of turns it took to remove it.


Install the tie rod end and locknut.



4. Install the steering gear. See Section 211-02 for more information.

5. Check up a convergence of wheels. See Section 204-00 for more information.
