Removal


1.
NOTE: TRW shown, Wuefrath is similar.


Remove the steering gear. For additional information, refer to Section 211-02.

2.
NOTE: Note the number of turns required to remove the tie rod end.


Remove the tie rod end and lock nut.
  • 1. Remove the tie rod end.
  • 2. Loosen the tie rod end lock nut.



3. Remove the cover.
  • 1. Remove the clamps.
  • 2. Remove the cover.
  • Disconnect the breather tube (if equipped).



4. Turn the pinion to expose the rack teeth.

CAUTION: To create the significant force required to remove the tie rod, clamp the rack in a suitable vice. Do not clamp the steering gear housing.


CAUTION: Use vise jaw protectors.


NOTE: To facilitate removal of the tie rod end, it may be necessary to secure the rack and pinion assembly in a vertical position.


Secure the steering gear in a suitable vice. Using a suitable pipe wrench, remove the steering rod.



Installation


1.
NOTE: Remove all traces of thread locking compound from the rack.


Install the steering rod using a special tool.
  • Apply thread locking compound to the internal threads of the new tie rod.



2.
NOTE: Install the cover. Use new clips.



Install the cover.
  • 1. Install the cover.
  • 2. Install the clamps.
  • Connect the breather tube (if equipped).



3.
NOTE: Make sure the tie rod end is screwed in the same number of turns as it took to remove it.


Install the tie rod end and lock nut.



4. Install the steering gear. For additional information, refer to Section 211-02.

5. Check the wheel alignment. For additional information, refer to Section 204-00.
