The ignition timing is set by the PCM based on engine operating conditions. Once the ignition timing is set, the PCM interrupts the current flow to the low voltage (primary) circuits of the ignition coils, thereby initiating ignition pulses that travel through the spark plug wires to the spark plugs in the cylinders, where the ignition spark is generated.

The ignition coils are activated by the PCM in pairs (cylinders 1 and 4 and cylinders 2 and 3) and send an ignition pulse to the cylinder on the ignition stroke and to the corresponding cylinder on the exhaust stroke. The presence of an ignition spark on the exhaust stroke ensures the afterburning of unburned fuel remaining in the cylinder, which helps reduce the toxicity of exhaust gases.
