Description and principle of operation

            0

In a new heating system, coolant flows continuously through the heater core. The performance of the heating system is controlled by a mechanical air temperature control valve. The temperature control and air distribution dampers are controlled by two drive cables.

Procedure for poor ventilation of the vehicle interior and fogging of the windshield, side windows and rear window.

Cars manufactured before 01/15/99 (release code XC).

If a customer complains about poor ventilation of the car interior and fogging of the windshield, side windows and rear window, insufficient forced air extraction in the rear bumper area may be a possible cause. This malfunction should be eliminated by installing a modified cover on the forced air outlet deflectors. For more information, refer to the Heater Housing chapter found in this section.

Parts required: Forced air vent cover.

NOTE: After the modification described, make sure that the customer is fully familiar with the principles of operation of the temperature and air distribution switches described in "Operation manual".

The procedure to be applied in case of fogging or icing of the inside of the windshield, side windows and rear window.

This procedure is provided for vehicles manufactured from 08.98 (WP release code) and markets in Denmark, Norway, Sweden and Finland.

NOTE: Before proceeding to this procedure, first perform "Procedure for poor ventilation of the vehicle interior and fogging of the windshield, side windows and rear window".

If a customer complains about poor ventilation of the vehicle interior and fogging or icing of the windshield, side windows and rear window, a possible cause in certain weather conditions may be the eddying movement and the deposition of snow and dirt between the rear panels, which blocks the forced air vents. To resolve this condition, clean and install mudguards.

Required details:
  • Rear mudguard kit for body variants "hatchback"
  • Rear mudguard kit for body variants "notchback"
  • Rear mudguard kit for body variants "station wagon"

NOTE: Complaint plausibility checks should be performed in bad weather conditions as the temperature rises (e.g. in the workshop) snow and mud melt.

If the forced air deflector is clogged, ice, snow and dirt must be carefully removed. Mudguards should be installed in front of the rear bumper to prevent this condition from occurring again.

Procedure to be followed when whistling noises occur in the heater housing.

If a customer complains of whistling noises that occur in position 3 or 4 of the blower switch, a possible cause of this condition may be the fits used during assembly, as a result of which there is a gap between the elements of the heater housing. This condition should be eliminated by gluing an additional insulating tape to the heater body to isolate the elements. For more information, refer to the Blower Motor chapter in this section.

Parts required: Insulating tape.
