Checking clutch operation

Clutch Diagnostics

A) with the engine running and the brake applied, hold the clutch pedal 12.7mm apart (1/2 inch) from the floor and shift several times from 1st to 2nd gear and back. If the shifts are soft, then the clutch is in order. If not, then it is incompletely disconnected. Check pedal, cable, lever and thrust bearing.

b) another test involves engine idling with transmission in neutral clutch pedal up - clutch engaged). Depress the clutch pedal, wait a few seconds, shift into top gear Noise should not be heard. Cracking and noise in this case indicates the failure of the pressure plate or clutch disc (provided, of course, that the gearbox itself is in perfect order).

V) a pinched clutch pedal is most often due to a cable failure or exhaust insulation separating the shaft from the clutch. Lubricate the grommet with SAE 10W-30 engine oil. Check where the cable enters the housing - there may be rust and corrosion. If it looks normal, lubricate it with oil. If the pedal operation is not restored, the cable is worn out and needs to be replaced.
