Inspection and testing of the front axle shafts

            0

NOTE: New front drive axle shafts should not be installed unless disassembly and inspection reveal excessive wear.

1. Examine covers of the hinge of a forward leading semiaxis, paying attention to presence of cracks, seizings and splits.

NOTE: When inspecting the covers of the CV joints of the front intermediate axle shaft, pay attention to the notches (dents) in the corrugations of the cover. If notches are found, they must be eliminated.

2. Inspect the underbody for any signs of grease leakage near the outside and inside of the front axle CV joint boot, indicating damage to the CV joint boot and/or boot clamps.

3. Check for leakage of the inner seal of the CV joint guide bearing race in the CV joint of the front drive axle.

4. Make sure the front wheel hub retainer is tightened to the correct torque.

5. The silicone contained in the front driveshaft CV joint boot sweats out during operation, resulting in a thin film of grease on the outside of the front drive axle CV joint boot. This is the normal state.

NOTE: Shafts are not balanced and do not affect torsional vibration.

6. If the problem persists after inspection, identify the symptoms and refer to the Symptoms Chart. Additionally, refer to "Noise, vibration and low frequency vibration (NVH) ". See Section 100-04 for more information.

State

Possible Causes

Action

• Clicking, popping and grinding when turning.

• Insufficient amount of lubrication or contamination of lubrication on the outer / inner sections of the CV joints of the front drive semi-axes.

• INSPECTION, CLEAN and LUBRICATE (as needed).

• Contact of another element with the axle shaft.

• INSPECTION and REPAIR (as needed).

•Wheel bearings, elements of the brake system, suspension or steering.

• INSPECTION and REPAIR (as needed). See Section 204-00 / 206-00 / 211-00 for more information.

•Vibration at high speed

• Imbalance of front wheels or tires.

• REPAIR or INSTALL a new element (as needed). See Section 204-04 for more information.

• Violation of the round shape of tires.

• REPAIR or INSTALL a new element (as needed). See Section 204-04 for more information.

• Incorrect fit of the outer CV joint of the front drive axle in the front wheel hub.

• REPAIR or INSTALL a new element (as needed). For more information, refer to the Disassembly and Assembly of the Half Shaft available in this section..

• Jitter when picking up speed.

• Excessively high CV joint operating angles caused by incorrect body height while driving.

• CHECK the height of the body during movement, SPECIFY the required spring stiffness and CHECK the elements specified in Sec. "Axle joint offset". REPAIR or INSTALL a new item (as needed). INSPECT and INSTALL the new element (as needed).

• Excessive wear or damage to the inner joint or outer joint of the front drive axle.

• Displacement of the hinge of a semiaxis

• Inner circlip of axle bearing retainer is missing or incorrectly seated on differential side gear.

• Incorrect position of the engine assembly with the gearbox in the block with the drive axle.

• INSPECT engine mounts for damage or wear.

• Body side member or strut support misaligned or damaged.

• REPAIR or INSTALL a new element (as needed). CHECK the geometry of the underbody.

• Front suspension elements are worn or damaged.

• REFER to CHECK for worn bushings or deformed elements (front anti-roll bar, front lower control arm). See Section 501-00 for more information.

• INSPECT and REPAIR or INSTALL a new item (as needed).

• REPAIR or INSTALL a new element (as needed). Axle, left
