NOTE: New front drive axle shafts should not be installed unless disassembly and inspection reveal excessive wear.
1. Inspect the front drive axle shaft joint boots for cracks, burrs and splits.
NOTE: When inspecting the front intermediate axle shaft CV joint boots, pay attention to nicks (dents) in the boot corrugations. If nicks are found, they must be eliminated.
2. Inspect the underbody, paying attention to any signs of grease leakage near the outer and inner sections of the front drive axle CV joint boots, indicating damage to the CV joint boots and/or boot clamps.
3. Check for leaks in the inner seal of the CV joint guide bearing race in the CV joint of the front drive axle shaft.
4. Make sure the front wheel hub lock is tightened to the specified torque.
5. The silicone in the front drive axle CV joint boot sweats during operation, resulting in a thin film of grease on the outside of the front drive axle CV joint boot. This is normal.
NOTE: Axles are not subject to balancing and do not affect torsional vibration levels.
6. If the malfunction persists after inspection, determine the malfunction symptoms and refer to the Malfunction Symptom Table. Additionally, refer to "Noise, Vibration, and Low-Frequency Hum (NVH)". For additional information, refer to Section 100-04.

Possible Causes |
Action |
•Clicking, popping and grinding noises when turning. |
•Insufficient amount of grease or contamination of grease on the outer/inner sections of the CV joints of the front drive axle shafts. |
•INSPECT, CLEAN and LUBRICATE (as needed). |
•Contact of another element with the axle shaft. |
•INSPECT and REPAIR (as necessary). |
|
•Wheel bearings, brake, suspension or steering system components. |
•INSPECT and REPAIR (as necessary). Refer to Section 204-00 / 206-00 / 211-00 for additional information. |
|
•Vibration at high speed |
•Imbalance of the front wheels or tires. |
• REPAIR or INSTALL a new component (as necessary). Refer to Section 204-04 for additional information. |
•Violation of the rounded shape of the tires. |
• REPAIR or INSTALL a new component (as necessary). Refer to Section 204-04 for additional information. |
|
•Incorrect fit of the outer CV joint of the front drive axle shaft in the front wheel hub. |
•REPAIR or INSTALL a new component (as necessary). For more information, refer to Disassembling and Assembling the Axle Shaft in this section.. |
|
• Shaking when picking up speed. |
• Excessively high operating angles of the CV joint caused by incorrect body lift height during movement. |
•CHECK the ride height while driving, CHECK the required spring stiffness and CHECK the elements specified in the section "Axle shaft joint offset". REPAIR or INSTALL a new element (as necessary). INSPECTION and INSTALL a new element (as necessary). |
•Excessive wear or damage to the inner joint or outer joint of the front drive axle shaft. |
•Displacement of the axle shaft joint |
|
•The inner retaining ring of the axle bearing separator is missing or is not seated correctly on the gear on the differential side. |
•Incorrect position of the engine assembly with the gearbox in the block with the drive axle. |
•CHECK engine mount components for damage or wear. |
•The body side member or pillar support is displaced or damaged. |
• REPAIR or INSTALL a new element (as necessary). CHECK the geometry of the underbody. |
|
•Front suspension components are worn or damaged. |
•REFER to CHECK for worn bushings or distorted components (front stabilizer bar, front lower control arm). Refer to Section 501-00 for additional information. |
|
•INSPECT and REPAIR or INSTALL new item (as necessary). |
• REPAIR or INSTALL new component (as needed). Axle shaft, left |
