Timing adjustment, toothed belt tension (diesel)

            0

After installing one or both toothed belts, the timing mechanism must be checked and, if necessary, adjusted. This requires three special mandrels that you can make yourself. You need to carefully study the individual provisions of the section "Removal and installation of a gear belt" or at least read this section.

Adjustment

Rotate the engine at the crankshaft pulley twice before adjusting.

Remove the toothed belt cover, see details in paragraphs. 1.3 and 1.7.

Remove the cylinder head cover.

Turn the crankshaft so that the piston in the first cylinder is at TDC, see point 1.7.

The crankshaft is at TDC in the first cylinder if the groove on the camshaft eccentric is parallel to the upper edge of the cylinder head. The large semicircle should look up.

Rotate the engine counterclockwise so that the crankshaft pulley is at a position approximately 30°before TDC on the first cylinder (estimate the angle: 1/8 of the circle is 45°).

For fine adjustment, a TDC adjustment pin is required, such as Ford 21-104. If it is not available, make your own tool, shown in the figure.

Unscrew the screw plug from the cylinder block, which is located on the front wall of the engine under the high pressure fuel pump.

Screw in Ford special tool 21-104.

Turn the crankshaft clockwise using a spanner wrench until it rests on the adjusting pin. As a result, the crankshaft is exactly at TDC.

Unscrew the four fixing bolts of the toothed belt sprocket on the camshaft. The timing belt sprocket must rotate freely on the camshaft.

Install the special tool 21-105 or a 5 mm steel spacer in the groove on the camshaft eccentric.

Orient the special tool by turning the engine by the crankshaft until the tool is parallel to the top edge of the cylinder head. To check, try sliding templates of the same thickness on the left and right.

Install the adjusting pin -left arrow- into the camshaft sprocket. Adjusting pin diameter Ford 23-019 6 mm. If a special tool is not available, use an appropriate 6 mm pin.

Loosen the fixing bolt of the toothed belt tensioner -E-, see fig. F-1037.

Attention! The tensioner requires a Torx screwdriver, T50.

On both sides of the tensioner, press the belt with your fingers in the direction of the arrows and release again. As a result, the belt tension is evenly distributed.

Tighten the camshaft sprockets and toothed belt tensioner.

Establish an adjusting pin of a gear wheel of the fuel pump of a high pressure, see the right arrow on fig. F-10148. The diameter of the adjusting pin for the Bosch high pressure fuel pump is 6 mm, the diameter of the adjusting pin for the Lucas pump is 9.5 mm.

If the pin cannot be installed, loosen the toothed belt tension and remove it.

Turn the high pressure fuel pump gear until the adjusting pin can be installed.

Lay the toothed belt in this position and tension it using the spring force of the belt tensioner.

Remove the adjusting pins and steel shim for the camshaft.

Screw the screw plug into the engine block.

Install the cylinder head cover.

Install the top and bottom timing belt covers.

Install the V-belt see paragraph 1.19.

Connect ground wire to battery (-).

If so, set the clock and set the anti-theft code for the radio.
