Removing and installing camshafts (petrol) (Mondeo 1)

            0

Four-cylinder petrol engine.

Attention! If the valve timing mechanism parts are to be used again, they can only be installed in their original locations. Therefore, we recommend making a shelf for laying out the parts.

Removal

Remove the timing belt, see p. 1.3.

Remove the timing belt, see p. 1.3.

Unscrew the camshaft sprockets and use the Ford 15-030 key to prevent the shafts from turning.

Unscrew the camshaft sprockets and use the Ford 15-030 key to prevent the shafts from turning.

Loosen the camshaft cover bolts in pairs by 1/2 turn, following the sequence shown in the figure. Repeat this process in the same order until the bolts are completely unscrewed.

Remove the bearing caps, camshafts and radial seals.

Installation

Installation

Apply a standard sealant, such as Loctite 5, to the sealing surface between the bearing caps and the cylinder head, doing this on the first bearing cap, on the "arrow" side of the timing belt.

Install the bearing caps and camshafts in the same order they were removed. Place the Ford 21-162 adjustment ruler, see paragraph 1.3., "Removal".

Note! The bearing caps are numbered to make it easier to install them in their old places during assembly. The numbering starts from the exhaust manifold side and starts with "0". The intake camshaft is identified by an additional cam on the end of the shaft for the CID sensor.

Tighten the camshaft bearing cap bolts in the reverse order of removal. Tighten the bolts in stages, tightening each time by another 1/2 turn, without allowing the camshafts to become skewed. Finally, tighten all bolts to a torque of 10 Nm first, then 20 Nm.

Lightly lubricate the new shaft seals with engine oil and install them using the special Ford 21-009B tool. The shaft seal rings should sit 1.5 mm below the edge of the hole. If there is no special tool, the seal rings can be driven in using a pipe whose inner and outer diameters are equal to the inner and outer diameters of the ring.

Install the camshaft sprockets. Tighten the mounting bolts to 70 Nm. Use a wrench to hold the camshaft from turning.

Install the timing belt, complete the engine, see p. 1.3.
