Removing and installing the rear suspension axle support (Sedan and Hatchback) (Mondeo 1 and 2)

Note: Once the rear hub is removed, its bearings are no longer usable. Therefore, after removal, the hub must always be replaced together with the bearings.

Removal

1. Support the front wheels with chocks. Then lift the rear of the car and place it on supports. Remove the corresponding rear wheel.

2. Remove the ABS sensor (if equipped) from the rear axle support (chapter 9).

3. Remove the hub assembly with bearings (paragraph 9).

Models with drum brakes

4. Install the clamp on the brake hose, then release the hose clamp and disconnect it from the suspension strut.

5. Unscrew the union nut and disconnect the brake pipe from the wheel cylinder. To avoid the subsequent bleeding procedure, it is recommended not to disconnect the brake pipe from the wheel cylinder, provided that the rigid and flexible brake pipes are not damaged.

6. Unscrew the bolts securing the rear shield to the rear axle support (see Fig. 10.6). The brake pads and handbrake cable do not need to be disconnected.

Models with disc brakes

7. Remove the splash shield bolts from the rear axle support.

All models

8. Loosen the bolt securing the reaction arm to the bottom of the axle support and move the arm down.

9. Remove the bolts securing the front and rear lower arms to the axle support and move the arms to the side.

10. Support the axle support on a stand. Then unscrew the clamp bolt securing the axle support to the strut.

11. Using a pry bar, press the axle support downwards by its upper part and separate it from the suspension strut. Pull the axle support out from under the wheel arch.

Installation

12. Install the axle support onto the stand. Then insert the clamp bolt and tighten it to the specified torque.

13. Install the front and rear lower control arms onto the axle support. Insert the bolts, tightening them by hand.

14. Install the reaction arm onto the lower part of the axle support. Tighten the bolts.

15. Install the rear shield (or splash shield) onto the axle support and tighten the bolts to the specified torque.

Models with drum brakes

16. Install the brake pipe to the wheel cylinder (if the pipe was disconnected). Tighten the connection nut.

17. Connect the hose to the stand, install the clamp and remove the clamp installed to prevent leaks.

All models

18. Install the new hub assembly with bearings.

19. Install the ABS sensor (if available - see chapter 9).

20. Install the wheel and lower the vehicle to the ground.

21. Now that the vehicle is supported by the suspension, fully tighten the torque arm and lower control arm mounting bolts.

22. Bleed the brake system if necessary (chapter 9).
