Examination
1. Before removing, check the wheel sensors with a voltmeter, which must be connected to the sensor's electrical connector. An analog voltmeter is inconvenient because it does not work fast enough. It is recommended to use a digital voltmeter with an AC voltage control mode.
2. Raise the appropriate wheel, disconnect the sensor wiring and connect a voltmeter to the sensor block.
3. Rotate the wheel and check the voltage. Depending on the speed, the readings should be 1.5...2.0 V.
4. Another method of control is possible using an oscilloscope, the screen of which displays the increase in the amplitude of alternating current oscillations depending on the wheel speed.
5. If the sensor voltage is close to zero, replace it.
Removal
Front wheel sensor
6. Apply the parking brake, lift the front end and place it on supports. Remove the corresponding wheel.
7. Unscrew the sensor mounting bolt located on the steering knuckle and remove the sensor (see Fig. 21.7).
8. Remove the sensor wiring harness from the support brackets on the front suspension strut and wheel arch.
9. Pull out the retaining clips and remove the slotted head screws and screw retainers holding the wheel arch liner. Remove the liner.
10. Disconnect the electrical connector and remove the sensor and wiring harness.
Rear wheel sensor
11. Support the front wheels with chocks and engage first gear or select the "P" position. Raise the rear of the car and place it on supports. Remove the corresponding wheel.
12. Remove the sensor mounting bolt located on the rear brake shield (drum brake) or rear axle support (disc brake). Remove the sensor.
13. On disc brake models, pull out the retainer and remove the slotted head screws and screw retainers holding the liner in place. Remove the liner.
14. Disconnect the sensor wiring from the rear suspension strut (or rear axle support) and the wheel arch.
15. From inside the vehicle, remove the rear seat cushion. Then disconnect the sensor wiring harness electrical connector (see Fig. 21.15).
16. Pull the sensor and wiring harness out through the rubber grommet in the passenger compartment floor.
