Removal and installation of the pressure limiting valve (with ABS)

            0

Note 1: Valves are removable on early models with Mecatronic type ABS only. On later models with ABS, the valves are not removable. Their functions are performed by a hydraulic modulator.

Note 2: see the warning at the beginning paragraph 15 about careful handling of brake fluid.

Withdrawal

1. On models equipped with ABS. such valves are installed on the hydraulic modulator (see fig. 19.1).

Pic. 19.1. Location of pressure relief valves on the ABS hydraulic modulator.
1. Rear right brake valve
2. Outlet port, front left brake
3. Inlet port, from master cylinder (secondary circuit)
4. Rear left brake valve
5. Outlet port, front right brake
6. Inlet port, from master cylinder (primary circuit)

2. Disconnect the negative battery cable (chapter 5 paragraph 1).

3. Remove the air cleaner (chapter 4). Remove the intake duct and its chamber.

4. Disconnect the electrical connector for the low fluid level indicator on the brake reservoir,

5. Unscrew the reservoir cap, seal the reservoir with a thin film, and tighten the cap to minimize leakage when the valve is subsequently removed.

6. Turn away fixing nuts of the main cylinder. Carefully remove the cylinder from the servo booster without disconnecting the brake lines. Move the master cylinder in the engine compartment to the left and support it on the upper support of the left suspension strut.

7. Loosen the fixing nuts of the servo amplifier and move the servo amplifier to the side.

8. Cover the hydraulic modulator with rags to catch smudges.

9. Wipe the valve to be removed. While holding the valve with a wrench, unscrew the connection nut. Pull out the pipe and bend it slightly away from the valve.

10. Remove the valve from the hydraulic modulator.

Installation

11. Installation - in the reverse order of removal. Finally, bleed the air from the hydraulic system (paragraph 15).
