Removing and installing the handbrake lever (Mondeo 1 and 2)

Removal


1. Raise the front and rear of the car and place them on supports. Release the handbrake lever completely.

2. Remove the central console (Chapter 11).

3. Working underneath the vehicle, remove the exhaust system from its rubber mounts. Lower the exhaust system as low as possible and place it on stands.

4. Disconnect the exhaust system heat-insulating casing from the bottom.

5. Disconnect the secondary (rear) handbrake cables from the equalizer bar (see Fig. 26.5).

6. From inside the passenger compartment, unscrew the two mounting bolts securing the handbrake lever to the floor (see Fig. 26.6).

7. Turn the lever upside down. Disconnect the primary cable end from the segment.



8. Remove the lever from the vehicle.

Installation


9. Installation - in the reverse order of removal.

10. The primary cable must be correctly installed on the segment.

11. Move the latch away from the adjustment mechanism, lift the lever and pull it out by 40 mm (see Fig. 26.11) (approximately). Release the latch so that it locks the mechanism and release the cable. The mechanism will be set to the correct position.

12. Before resuming driving, check the operation of the handbrake.
