Removing and installing the rear suspension crossmember (Focus 2)

It is easier to remove the rear suspension crossmember on a lift. If it is not possible to install the car on a lift, lift the rear of the car.

USEFUL TIP: When removing the rear suspension crossmember, you must have assistants to hold it and lower it.


You will need a 15 mm socket head.

1. Remove the rear wheels.

2. Remove the rear suspension spring (see "Replacing the rear suspension spring").

3. Remove both rear brake hoses (see "Replacing brake hoses").

4. Bend the retainer with a screwdriver…

5. …and disconnect the parking brake cable.

6. Unscrew the mounting bolt…

7. …and disconnect the parking brake cable from the longitudinal lever.

8. Remove the two mounting screws…

9. …and remove the protective shield.



10. Disconnect the wheel speed sensor wiring harness from the holders on the lever (on vehicles equipped with ABS).

11. Use a screwdriver to pry up and remove the exhaust system suspension cushion from the rear suspension crossmember bracket.

12. Squeeze the lock…

13. …and disconnect the pipe leading to the intake pipe from the fuel vapor recovery system canister.

14. Disconnect the fuel tank ventilation line in the same way.

15. Squeeze the lock…

16. …and disconnect the adsorber ventilation hose.

17. Install hydraulic struts under the crossmember.



18. Remove two bolts securing the rear suspension trailing arm brackets to the body.

19. Unscrew the three bolts securing the crossbar to the body on both sides of the car…

20. …and remove the rear suspension crossmember, lowering it on the struts.

21. Install the rear suspension crossmember in the reverse order of removal. Finally tighten the crossmember mounting bolt nuts with the vehicle on the ground.

22. After installing the beam, bleed the brake system (see "Bleeding the hydraulic brake system" and adjust the parking brake drive if necessary (see "Adjusting the Parking Brake Drive").
