Inspection and replacement of the rear hub and bearings (Sedan and Hatchback)

            0

Note: Once the rear hub is removed, its bearings become unusable. Therefore, after removal, the hub must always be replaced together with the bearings.

Examination

1. Rear hub bearings are non-adjustable and are supplied with the hub. It is not possible to replace them separately from the hub.

2. To check for bearing wear, lift the tailgate and place it on supports. Fully release the parking brake,

3. Grasp the rear wheel from above and below and try to shake it. Excessive play or uneven travel or vibration when turning the wheel indicates worn hub bearings (see fig.9.3).

Replacement

4. Remove the rear wheel.

5. On models with drum brakes, remove the rear brake drum (chapter 9).

6. On models with disc brakes, remove the rear brake disc (chapter 9).

7. On all models, knock off the dust cap and remove the hub nut. Loosen the driveshaft/hub nut. This nut is special and once unscrewed, it can be reused no more than five times. It makes sense to put a risk on it after unscrewing the nut. Purchase a new nut if necessary.

8. Using a puller, remove the hub assembly with bearings from the trunnion. After that, the bearings become unusable.

9. Install the new hub assembly with bearings on the trunnion, then screw on the nut and tighten it to the required torque.

10. Drive the dust cap onto the hub.

11. Install the brake disc or drum (chapter 9).

12. Install the rear wheel and lower the vehicle to the ground.
