Recommendations for starting the engine in severe frost (Focus 2)

The main problem in winter is starting a cold engine. It most often occurs with carburetor engines, but in severe frost, the owner of a car with an injection engine can also face it. The reasons are known: thickened oil, a drop in battery capacity and poor evaporation of gasoline.

One of the options for solving this problem is to install electric devices for heating the engine cooling system fluid (pre-heaters).

The main disadvantage of electric heating of the coolant is that you need to have a special panel with a socket at home or office. The solution is an autonomous heater on liquid fuel, which is also built into the engine cooling system and works on the principle of a hot water boiler. The fuel for it is gasoline or diesel fuel, depending on what your car engine runs on.

Another benefit of heating systems is that their use increases the engine life. Each cold engine start at a temperature of -20°C is equivalent to a run of 800 km. By the way, according to modern views, the engine will reach operating temperature faster, and its wear will be less, if after starting you do not stand still, but start moving as quickly as possible, avoiding, of course, excessive load on the engine.

WARNING: Installation of engine cooling system heaters should only be carried out at authorized service stations.


The procedure for starting an engine without a pre-heater in severe frosts is practically no different from the usual one. We can only recommend performing the following preparatory operations to facilitate starting a cold engine.



1. If the car has been parked for more than one night, wait 3–5 seconds after turning on the ignition before starting the engine so that the electric fuel pump has time to increase the fuel pressure in the fuel system to the operating pressure.

2. The capacity of the battery in severe frost decreases, and the energy consumption for turning the engine crankshaft with thickened oil is much higher. In order to increase the service life of the battery, before turning on the starter, turn on the high beam headlights for 30-60 seconds, using the steering column switch in the light signaling mode. Due to the passage of a small current in the battery, chemical processes begin and its ability to give off energy increases significantly.

3. If the engine does not start on the first attempt (the starter worked for 5-10 s), the second attempt can be made no earlier than 30 s later. If the engine does not start on the third attempt, it is necessary to look for faults in the fuel and ignition systems.

USEFUL TIP: Do not try to start the engine by towing in severe frost. This type of start often causes the timing belt to jump, which will require expensive engine repairs.
