The instrument panel provides the driver with information and warnings about the operation of the vehicle's systems using warning lamps.

Indicator lamps are provided for optional equipment, but despite the presence of symbols, not all lamps light up.

Gauges and indicator lamps can use outputs from common sensors to perform their respective functions. This must be taken into account when diagnosing any malfunctioning system, for example: Electronic speedometer receives signal from vehicle speed sensor (VSS), mounted on a gearbox in a block with a drive axle. Other systems that require input information include engine management system, anti-lock brake system, speed control system, trip computer.

Always be aware of and check the operation of related systems as this can save time when a fault is found. Instrument panels should be repaired as a single unit and should not be dismantled for repairs.
