Note: This procedure applies to both analog and digital instrument clusters.
1. Disconnect the negative battery cable.
2. On models with tilt steering column, lower the steering column all the way down.
3. On 1986 models, lower the fuse panel and disconnect the speedometer cable by accessing it from the rear of the instrument cluster.
4. On 1987 and later models, remove the ignition switch cylinder (Section 8).
5. Loosen the fixing screws and remove the steering column cover.
6. Remove the decorative panels of the instrument panel (chapter 11).
7. Loosen the instrument cluster locking screws (see figure).
8. Remove the odometer reset button (if present) and unscrew the housing glass from the instrument panel (see figure).
9. On 1987 and later models, disconnect the speedometer cable at the transmission (see illustration). Slide the cable into the passenger compartment to give it more movement when removing the instrument cluster in addition to the electrical connectors.
10. On models with adjustable steering column, remove the column boot, then unscrew the two locking screws, then disconnect the gearshift indicator from the instrument cluster (see illustration).
11. Push the unit out and disconnect the electrical connectors, on 1987 and later models, disconnect the speedometer cable at the unit.
12. Remove the assembly from the instrument cluster, then on 1986 models, disconnect the speedometer by going behind it and pulling out the electrical connector (see diagram).
13. When installing, partially replace the unit and connect the speedometer connector and wires. Insert the gearshift indicator, tighten the screws. Firmly crimp the column with a cuff. On 1987 and later models, connect the speedometer cable in the engine compartment. Further installation is carried out in the reverse order of assembly.
