Tires and rims — general information

            0

Tires play an important role in the driving performance of the vehicle and therefore in the active safety of your Focus: carcass, rubber compound and computer-aided tire profile turn modern radial tires into high-tech products. On each wheel's postcard-sized bearing surface, they carry your Focus right through, take on the slight jolts of the road, and carry all the driving, braking and centrifugal forces. Under medium load, the radial tires on your Focus will last about 30-50 thousand km at the front and about 40-70 thousand km at the front «dragging along» rear axle. If you drive mainly short distances, you should change your tires - regardless of the depth of their residual profile - no later than 7-8 years. During this period, dirt, environmental chemistry, internal aging processes and last but not least the sun have damaged them so much that they can no longer do their job reliably. However, also don't trust an old, new-looking spare tire; appearance is a delusion, under it dangerously aged material.

Two versions factory fitted - Focus rims

Ford equips all Focus models with two main types of rims: depending on the design and model, sheet steel or light metal rims are used in sizes 5J x or 6J x 15". Light metal rims are always supplied in sizes 6J x 15". Our table lists the sizes that Ford provides as factory or special equipment for various models. What tire and rim sizes are allowed for your Focus is indicated in the car's data sheet. But if you want to put your Focus on other wheels, the approved products must be in possession of a General Occupancy Permit (AVE) with the corresponding verification number. If tire sizes are not listed on the vehicle data sheet, check with Ford prior to fitting or with an authorized person at TUV/DEKRA for suitability. Rims and tires that are not entered in the technical data sheet at the factory, you must enter in the documents for the car (letter and certificate) by partial examination in TUV/DEKRA.

Rims

The standard rim size is always given in inches. For example, the designation 5J x 14" means a deep stock rim five inches wide and 14 inches in diameter. Letter «1» means the shape of the side flange. A feature of the deep bed rim: in order for the tire to sit better, an elevation is located on one shoulder of the rim along the perimeter (hump). When cornering fast, it prevents the tire bead from slipping off the rim shoulder in the stock.
