The Ford Mondeo is also available with permanent all-wheel drive. Additional components are required to drive the rear wheels. The front and rear axles are connected by a cardan shaft. The cardan shaft drives the rear axle differential, from which power is transmitted by two half-axle cardans to the wheels. To allow different speeds of the front and rear wheels, e.g. when cornering, a vehicle with permanent all-wheel drive requires an additional power take-off (center differential). The transfer box is made in the form of a planetary gear set with a sun and planetary gear. It provides power distribution: 58% to the front wheels and 42% to the rear. Between revolutions of the front and rear wheels, for example, when the front wheels slip, the normal traction control brake system comes into action, see 15.19. The transfer case is flange-mounted directly on the gearbox and is driven from the teeth of the front axle differential. The transfer case has a separate lubrication system, the oil in which, like the gearbox oil, does not require replacement throughout the entire life of the vehicle. The differential must only be repaired by specialist workshops.

Attention! When towing a four-wheel drive vehicle, pay attention to some of the instructions see point 25.2.
