Exhaust systems in the childhood days of the automotive industry were only tasked with reducing combustion noise «explosive engine» and send exhaust gases into the atmosphere - that was then. Starting from the eighties of the last century, the exhaust system began to perform another «work»: catalysts in the exhaust system absorb toxic substances by almost 90%. The factory Mondeo is equipped immediately with a multi-component exhaust system.

The possibility of replacing the exhaust system Ford covers the appropriate service centers. For mounting service blocks «is divided» working installation on the appropriate flanges and the new part is inserted with a new gasket. During installation, the entire unit is hung on new rubber holders.

Naturally, the life of the exhaust system is highly dependent on the conditions of use of your Mondeo. If you mainly move around the city and mostly short distances, then you can find much more in your silencers «eaten» condensate, soot and aggressive acids. When driving over long distances, a constantly well-heated exhaust system has a significantly increased service life. However, as a rule, the Mondeo exhaust system withstands all the nasty operating conditions for about 70,000 kilometers.
  • The front end of the catalytic exhaust system resists rust more successfully than the rest of the components. Reason: The flue gases in this part have temperatures between 800 and 1000°C, so that water spray and condensate evaporate much faster.
  • On its way through the intermediate reflection silencer and the end silencer to the end tube, the exhaust gases are constantly cooled. They enter the atmosphere, depending on the nature of the work (petrol, diesel) with temperatures around 150 - 300°C. At the same time, most of the condensate collects in the end silencer. The mixture of combustion residues and aggressive acids thus destroys the muffler from the inside out.
  • Once the cold splashing water «washes» exhaust system under the bottom of the car, there are strong temperature fluctuations. When driving for long distances, they load the front parts of the installation more. This, in spite of the flexible intermediate element, can lead to a continuous destruction of the tube or the appearance of fine cracks the size of a hair.
  • Splash and salt water cause rust on the outside. In addition, stone impacts and other external influences, such as touching the roadway with the installation, the exhaust system «is going through» equally hard. In addition to all this, harmful vibration frequencies are added, which, for example, can lead to brittleness and cracks in the hanging rubber loops.

Oxidized metal cannot be reliably welded for a long time. Therefore, the success of repairing a rusted exhaust system is most often short-lived. The putty and bandage hold on a little longer, but corroded metal, as practice has shown, reappears soon near the repair sites. In exhaust systems with more than one muffler, it is not uncommon that after replacing the first muffler, after a few months, you have to «dismiss» second. Therefore, in workshops, the entire system is most often completely replaced. However, before starting repairs, inspect the exhaust system and then decide whether to replace the entire installation or its individual components.
