Fuel types and handling

Ford Mondeo petrol engines require Euro Super (ROZ 95). But they can also use Super Plus (ROZ 98). This grade of fuel makes sense «accept» in the case when your Mondeo, for example, in a busy mode at high external temperatures, constantly needs increased power. Fuel consumption with Super Plus can be even lower. However, your consumption will naturally have a greater impact on consumption «own» gas pedal.

With low gas, drive to the place - this reduces the price of fuel

Therefore, always accelerate rapidly, shifting to the next higher gear as soon as possible. Once the desired speed has been reached, try to keep your Mondeo in the highest possible gear and low «gas». Shift the engine to a higher gear only when overtaking or driving in traffic. In addition, the engine should be stopped during short stops, for example, in front of a railway barrier, a traffic light or a traffic jam: it «recovering» already in 5 - 7 seconds, and the environment will only benefit from this.

TECHNICAL DICTIONARY

Fuel - terms and norms

Standard Gasoline/Super Gasoline: almost identical in terms of purification degree, evaporation parameters (important for flammability) and energy balance (heat of combustion per kilogram of fuel). The decisive difference: super-petrol has a higher detonation power than regular petrol.

Diesel fuel: fuel that perfectly matches the physical properties «diesel unit». Due to its high flammability and high compression ratio in diesel engines, controlled combustion takes place in a fraction of a second. For gasoline engines, such diesel fuel would, of course, «pure poison» - it would oil the spark plugs in seconds.

Summer/winter diesel fuel: summer diesel fuel according to DIN 51 601 is accepted at the fuel dispenser between spring and autumn without any liquid additives. However, it is already at low sub-zero temperatures (about -8°С) has the ability to wax and damage the fuel lines along with the filter. Therefore, in Germany, during the transition period, diesel fuel with a small proportion of liquid additives is used. According to DIN standards, winter diesel fuel retains its fluidity down to -12°C, but in practice this fuel can be trusted, however, at negative temperatures down to -22°C.

Detonation resistance: the higher the compression ratio, the higher the thermal performance of the engine. However, when the fuel in gasoline engines has a tendency to self-ignite, it can lead to uncontrolled combustion - the engine «ringing». Superfuel «repel attacks» high combustion pressures like regular gasoline - so it has less ignition potential. If you mistakenly fill the Mondeo with standard gasoline, it may react when it accelerates sharply from low speeds, with strong blunders «ringing». To avoid serious complications, Mondeo engines are equipped with combustion knock sensors. As soon as they discover «unusual» vibrations in the engine block, then the relevant information is transmitted to the PCM and the ignition timing is gradually adjusted to the parameters of the worst fuel. Your Mondeo is a little slow in these matters. In this situation, work a little on the gas pedal and go only to medium speed. Quickly raise the prestige of your «ringing water» adding a couple of liters of superfuel to it.

Octane number: technically represents the knock resistance of the fuel. As a rule, on the filling column you can see the designation "ROZ" (Research-OktanZahl), less commonly specification "MOZ" (Motor- OktanZahl). The minimum requirements for lead-free fuel are given in Euro EN 228.

Cetane number: net, obtained in the laboratory, ratio. Designed to describe the nature of fuel ignition. Cetane, which is pronounced for ignition, is assigned the number 100, methyl naphthalene, which has almost no such property, on the contrary, the number 0. The cetane number indicates how many percent of the volume of cetane must contain a mixture with methyl naphthalene in order to have the same ignitability as tested fuel. For diesel fuel, this value should be 45.

HAZARD INFORMATION

Fuel handling

Great care must be taken when handling fuel. Therefore, do not shoulder the maintenance and repair of the fuel system. And above all, extreme caution must prevail when emptying the fuel tank. Therefore, first read the following safety instructions:
  • Disconnect all wires from the battery and insulate the free poles of the battery.
  • Emptying the tank is best done outdoors. In this case, a fuel-resistant hand pump must be used (e.g. bellows hose pump). Never attempt to pour fuel through the top opening in the tank (fuel gauge flange) or suck fuel through an empty hose by mouth - fuel additives can be poisonous!
  • It is recommended to place a CO2-powder or foam fire extinguisher of fire hazard class B within reach.
  • Never empty the tank in a pit: escaping gases are heavier than air, so an explosive mixture can form in the pit after a few hours. Consequences: Imminent explosion hazard and adverse health effects due to inhalation of such vapours.
  • Make sure that there are no switched on electrical appliances, open flames, heat and discharge sources nearby while working with fuel.
  • Fill fuel only into a resealable, clean and clearly labeled container. For this, there are special containers with fire protection and an equalizing shut-off plug.
  • There may be residual gases in the free fuel tank. Therefore, pay special attention - risk of explosion!
