Removal and installation of the generator

Removal and installation of the generator on a car with a 16-valve engine is more laborious, removal and installation on a car with a V6 engine.

Removing the alternator on a 16-valve engine (release before January 1997) run as follows:

- disconnect a negative wire from the storage battery, observing necessary precautionary measures;

- completely remove the intake housing, for which disconnect the large hose on one side, wring out the low pressure hose and release the three bolts and nuts observed in the middle;

- disconnect shown in fig. 283 connections (shown previously removed alternator to better see connections);

- unscrew the corresponding bolt securing the connecting wire to the body;

- release the wire fastening from the front wall;

- place the front of the vehicle on supports and remove the lining from the inside of the wheel arch on the generator side (one mount left and right);

- turn the belt tensioner bolt to the right until the drive belt can be removed;

- Turn away the bottom bolts of fastening of the generator, lower the car on wheels;

- Turn away the top bolts; carefully turning the generator (due to limited space, ensure that the belt pulley is on top), only then remove the generator, then disconnect the other wire.

Removing the alternator on a 16-valve engine (release since January 1997) run as follows:

- Jack up the front of the car and unscrew the protective cover from the underside of the belt drive (in two places);

- Remove the drive belt as described below;

- lower the car on wheels;

- find the wire on the body and disconnect the bolt at its end, unscrew the power steering wire bracket from the lever eye;

- disconnect both fuel lines (fast acting constipation);

- unplug the connector from the back of the generator (pic. 284);

- unscrew both shown in fig. 285 alternator mounting bolts;

- Pull up the generator.

Install in the following order (the car is on the ground at this time, it must be raised again, so follow the safety rules):

- establish the generator on a fastening bracket and tighten on the car of release since January, 1997 shown on fig. 285 bolts torque 45 Nm;

- on cars of earlier releases, temporarily install the wheel and lower the car to the ground again, install the upper mounting bolts and tighten with a torque of 45 Nm, raise the front of the car again and tighten the lower bolts with the same torque;

- on all vehicles, install the drive belt and tighten it with a pressure roller;

- reinstall the removable wheel arch cover;

- connect the wires to the generator and secure the clamp;

- install the wheel, lower the vehicle to the ground and tighten the wheel nuts to a torque of 85 Nm;

- install the rest of the details.

Removing the generator on a car with a 2.5-liter V6 engine is carried out as follows:

- disconnect a negative wire from the storage battery, observing necessary precautionary measures;

- raise the front of the car and unscrew the safety shield from below, under the front;

- Remove facing of a wheel niche;

- loosen the bolt in the middle of the tensioner and turn it to the left on the back of the tensioner until the belt is free, remove the belt;

- disconnect wires from the generator; to remove the nut, you need a socket with an extension and a hinge, to open the clamp - a screwdriver;

- Disconnect the tie rod on the alternator side from the steering knuckle arm (see sect. «Steering»);

- Release the rear support of the generator using the extension, the hinge and the end head;

- Turn away the top bolt of fastening of the generator;

- Using the same tools, unscrew the lower alternator mounting bolt. To get to this bolt, insert an extension between the oil pan and exhaust pipe;

- take out the generator through an open wheel niche.

Install in the reverse order of removal. Tighten the alternator mounting bolts to a torque of 45 Nm, the tie rod joint nut to a torque of 37 Nm (always use a new nut).
