Typical generator faults (Mondeo 2)

Cause
Method of elimination
A. The red indicator lamp does not light when the ignition is turned on
1.
The battery is discharged
Start the engine using a jumper cable from the starter to a booster battery, or have the vehicle towed
2.
Broken battery cable
Check the battery wire and terminals
3.
The incandescent light bulb burned out
Replace the lamp
4.
Break in the wire between the ignition switch, the indicator lamp and the generator
Check the current flow through the circuit using a test lamp
5.
Break in the ground wire between the generator and the engine block
Check the wire
6.
Wear of generator brushes
Replace the brushes
7.
The voltage regulator is faulty
Replace the regulator
8.
Generator faulty
Repair or replace the generator
9.
The generator is still damp after washing the engine
Blow out the engine with compressed air
Q. The red indicator light comes on or glows dimly when the engine is running

The drive belt is damaged
Check the drive
2.
The wiring is faulty
Check the wiring
