Checking the electrical wiring of the engine compartment

Every 16,000 km or 12 months.

1. Park the vehicle on level ground, apply the parking brake and open the hood. Inspect all wiring inside the engine compartment by lighting it with a flashlight or portable lamp.

2. Typically, damage to the wiring can be caused by grabbing sharp edges or moving suspension/transmission components and/or the accessory drive belt. It can also be damaged by careless installation of components or melted by contact with hot engine parts, coolant lines, etc. In most cases, such damage is due to improper wiring after dismantling.

3. Depending on the nature of the fault, damaged wiring can be repaired by soldering in a new piece of wire and insulating the joints with electrical tape or heat shrink tubing. In case of significant damage, it is best to replace the entire wiring harness, but this can lead to significant costs.

4. After repairing the damage, it is necessary to correctly lay the harness so that it is not interfered with by other components, without tension and kinks. It must be fixed with plastic clips, clamps and ties.

5. Inspect all electrical connectors and make sure that there is no corrosion of the contacts, check the reliability of fixing their cases (see fig. 9.5). If the connector pins are corroded (the surface is covered with a white or green coating, or rust) or you suspect that the 8th connector is dirty, then it must be disconnected and cleaned with an electrical contact cleaner. If the connector pins are severely corroded, the connector must be replaced. In this case, it may be necessary to replace the wiring harness section. Detailed information can be obtained from dealers.

6. If, after washing with a special agent, the corrosion of the connector is removed and it looks quite serviceable, then it makes sense to wrap the connector with a suitable material in order to prevent moisture and dirt from entering it in the future. Suitable material can be offered by dealers.

7. Check up a condition of plugs and clips of the accumulator. When a malfunction is detected (see chapter 5) disassemble and then reassemble the connection or replace the wires. Similarly, check the ground contact points in the engine compartment - these should be reliable connections "metal-metal".

8. Details of checking high-voltage wires of spark plugs, see. in paragraphs 29 and 32.
