Engine oil and filter change

Every 16,000 km or 12 months.

1. Before starting this procedure, make sure that you have all the necessary tools. Prepare rags or old newspapers. They are useful for absorbing oil smudges.

2. Gloves are recommended to prevent scalding and protect skin from oil irritation.

3. For better access to the underside of the vehicle, lift the vehicle and support it on jack stands (or use a flyover or a lift).

Warning: Do not work under a vehicle that is only supported by a jack (hydraulic or parallelogram) or installed on unreliable supports (pieces of wood, etc.).

4. Locate the drain plug located at the back of the sump. During this procedure, the engine and exhaust system remain warm. Therefore, try to finish it while the engine and accessories are warm.

5. It is recommended to change the oil while the engine is still at normal operating temperature, immediately after a trip (when the arrow of the temperature gauge is located in the sector "Normal"). At the same time, heated oil and sludge flow out more easily.

6. Park the vehicle on a firm, level surface and apply the parking brake fully. Then engage first gear or reverse (manual transmission) or set the selector to position "R" (automatic transmission). Open the hood and remove the engine oil filler cap from the cylinder head. Then pull the dipstick to control the oil level from its nozzle (paragraph 3).

7. Raise the front of the car and place it on supports.

8. On models with a 4-cylinder engine, to improve access to the oil filter, remove the right front wheel. You can also remove the accessory drive belt cover to free up work space (fastened with two latches).

9. On models with a 6-cylinder engine, for easy access to the filter, you can remove the shield from under the radiator. But this is optional.

10. Be careful - do not touch heated parts, substitute a container under the drain plug, and then unscrew it (see fig. 3.10).

11. Let the oil flow into the container, and at this time check the condition of the plug gasket and replace it if necessary.

12. Wait for the used oil to drain into a container. As the oil jet weakens, move a container under it. After the oil has drained completely, wipe the plug and its threads in the sump, and then screw the plug back in and tighten it to the required torque.

13. Now move the used oil container under the filter. On 4-cylinder engines, the filter is located on the rear right side of the cylinder block. On 6-cylinder engines, the filter is located on the front of the cylinder block.

14. Unscrew the filter with a special tool. Get ready for an oil leak (see fig. 3.14). Inspect the old filter and make sure the rubber o-ring is not stuck to the engine. If it sticks, carefully remove it. Quickly turn the filter upside down to shed as little oil as possible.

15. Wipe the surface of the cylinder block in the filter installation area with a clean, lint-free cloth. If the installation method of the filter is not specified in the instructions attached to it, then install it as follows.

16. Apply some clean engine oil to the filter O-ring (see fig. 3.16).

17. Screw the filter into place until it stops. After that, tighten it 1/2-3/4 turn. Tighten the filter only by hand - do not use any tools.

18. Remove any remaining oil and all tools from under the vehicle, install the wheel and lower the vehicle to the ground.

19. Fill the engine with regulated grade oil in the required quantity (see fig. 3.19). First, drink half the required amount, and then wait a few minutes for the oil to drain into the pan. Continue to add oil in small portions until the level reaches the bottom mark on the dipstick. It takes about 0.5-1 liter of oil to raise the level from the bottom to the top mark.

20. Start the engine. The oil pressure indicator will come on for a few seconds and turn off when the new filter is filled with oil. Do not accelerate the engine while this indicator is on. Let the engine run for a few minutes and check for leaks around the filter seal and drain plug.

21. Stop the engine and wait a few minutes for the oil to drain back into the sump. Now, after filling the engine and filter channels with new oil, repeat the level check with the dipstick and add oil if necessary.

22. Used oil must be disposed of in accordance with "Basic repair procedures".

Note: It is immoral and illegal to dump used oil on the ground. Collect it in a special container and transfer it to the nearest vehicle fleet for recycling.
