The starting system is used to turn the engine over at a speed sufficient to start the engine. Due to the high current it uses, the system uses wires, connectors, and switches designed for heavy-duty ('high current') operation.
The starting system consists of a starter motor (starter) with a reduction gear, a battery, a remote control switch (ignition switch) and a relay.
The sequence of actions during startup is as follows:
- Ignition switch in start position III.
- The starter relay is activated.
- Voltage is supplied to the starter solenoid.
- The starter solenoid engages the pinion gear and the ring gear.
- The starter solenoid switches on the current supply from the battery to the starter.
- The starter remains engaged until the ignition switch is released.
