If the camshaft bearings are excessively worn, they must be replaced. Since special tools are required to install new bearings, this work must be performed at a specialized service station.
Traces of wear on the camshaft can be found on the bearing journals or the cam lobe. Scoring on the journals or damage to the bearing journals cannot be eliminated by regrinding; in this case, the camshaft must be replaced.
The tops of the cam lobes may show irregularities or chipping. Minor irregularities can be removed by fine grinding or sanding.
It should be noted that the surface of the working projections of the cams is hardened, therefore, after the integrity of the hardened layer is damaged, wear will occur very quickly.
