Safety precautions when working with a generator

When working with a generator, be sure to disconnect the battery.

Before removing the wires from the generator, it is necessary to mark them so that they can be reinstalled strictly in their proper places.

Do not disconnect the battery or generator while the engine is running.

When carrying out electric welding work, disconnect the battery and generator.

Checking the generator's performance

1. Check and, if necessary, adjust the tension of the generator drive belt.

2. Connect the voltmeter to the battery terminals.

3. Watching the voltmeter readings, start the engine. In the starter mode, the voltage may drop to 9 volts.

4. Increase engine speed to 4000 rpm, and the voltage should increase to 13.7–14.6 volts. This indicates normal operation of the generator and voltage regulator.

5. When the engine speed reaches 4000 rpm, turn on the high beam headlights or other powerful power consumers, while the voltage drop should not exceed 0.4 volts.

6. In case of significant voltage deviations during testing, the generator must be checked in a specialized workshop.
