Before you begin removing the engine from your vehicle for major or general repairs, there are some preliminary steps that need to be taken.
The choice of location for carrying out work is extremely important. The best place to perform an engine overhaul is a suitable work area with space to park the vehicle. In extreme cases, if there is no garage or workshop, work can be carried out on a flat, clean surface made of concrete or asphalt.
Thoroughly cleaning the engine compartment and engine before starting work will help keep your tools and hands clean.
A motor winch or A-frame will also be required. Make sure the lifting equipment is suitable for the weight of the engine and accessories. To avoid accidents, great care must be taken when removing the engine from the vehicle.
When removing the engine, you should use the help of an assistant. You should also seek advice from a specialist or more experienced mechanic. During the process of removing an engine from a vehicle, there are many procedures that cannot be performed by one person, due to the need to simultaneously carry them out in different parts of the engine compartment.
Plan all upcoming work in advance. Before starting work, prepare all the necessary equipment and tools. Certain equipment is required to safely perform engine removal and installation procedures(additional to the engine winch), such as a heavy-duty jack, a couple of sturdy stands, some blocks, and a dolly to support the engine. A complete set of wrenches and socket heads is also required (as described at the beginning of the manual), wooden blocks, sufficient rags and solvent to remove spilled oil, coolant and fuel. If you are renting a winch, first carry out all the preparatory operations and procedures that can be done without a winch - this will save you time and money.
To carry out some work that requires the use of special equipment, you will need the help of an auto service workshop. They usually have a very busy schedule, and it doesn't hurt to consult with the workshop in advance and arrange a time for the work to be carried out.
Always use extreme caution when removing and installing the engine into the vehicle. Carelessness when removing or installing the engine may result in serious injury. By planning your actions in advance and calculating your time, you can complete the upcoming work successfully.
