Removing and installing the fuel tank (Mondeo 1)

Warning! Only remove the fuel tank if you have a fuel suction pump. Do not suck fuel out with your mouth through a hose. For all-wheel drive models, follow the instructions at the end of the chapter.


Removal



Warning! Ensure good ventilation of the workplace. Fuel vapors are toxic, do not use open flame, flammable! Keep a fire extinguisher at hand.


Use up all the fuel in the tank while operating the vehicle.

Disconnect the negative (-) cable from the battery.

Warning! This will erase data in electronic memory devices, such as the engine fault memory device or the radio code. Please read the section carefully "Removing and installing the battery", before disconnecting it.


Unscrew the fuel tank cap and use the pump to draw fuel from the tank through the pipes. Follow the pump manufacturer's instructions.

Remove the rear seat cushions and disconnect the connector from the fuel level sensor

Raise the vehicle and support the fuel tank with a jack.

Unscrew the bolts of the rear axle stabilizer supports, fold the stabilizer down, see item 12.

Place a container under the fuel. Remove the hose clamps and remove the hoses.



Gasoline engine: Remove the fuel drain line from the quick-release fastener on the fuel filter.

Loosen the retaining strap bolts and carefully lower the fuel tank.

Disconnect the air bleed hose and fuel lines from the top of the tank. To make installation easier, mark the corresponding pipes with colored adhesive tape.

Check that all fuel lines and hoses are disconnected. Remove the fuel tank.

Installation



Before installation, check the fuel tank and mounting straps for defects and replace them if necessary.

Install the fuel tank in the installation position and connect the fuel level sensor plug.

Connect the upper fuel line.

Install the fuel tank, install the mounting straps and tighten them.

Connect the fuel line with a quick-release fastener to the filter and secure it with a clamp.

Fill the tank with fuel and screw on the tank cap.

Install the stabilizer, tighten the clamps to a torque of 25 Nm.

Connect the ground (-) cable to the battery. Set the existing clock and set the radio anti-theft code.

Check the functions of the fuel level indicator on the instrument panel.
