WARNING: Airbags do not replace seat belts. Moreover, when the vehicle is moving, the driver and front passenger must be fastened with seat belts, since in the event of a traffic accident, an airbag that has deployed itself can cause serious injury to a person not wearing a seat belt.
The SRS system includes:
- driver airbag module, located in the steering wheel hub and consisting of a folded airbag shell and a dome-shaped gas generator;
- front passenger airbag module (installed depending on the vehicle configuration), located in the instrument panel on the passenger side and consisting of a folded airbag shell and a tubular gas generator. Differs from the driver's airbag in shape and larger volume;
WARNING: When installing a child restraint system in the front passenger seat, turn off the passenger airbag (if equipped).
The switch is located in the upper right corner of the glove compartment. The airbag is deactivated using the car key (the photo shows a glove compartment option on a car with a non-deactivatable airbag, which has a plug instead of a switch).
When the front passenger airbag is turned off, the airbag off indicator light in the instrument cluster comes on;
– driver and front passenger side airbag modules (installed depending on vehicle configuration), located in the outer side parts of the front seat backs and consisting of a folded airbag shell and a gas generator;
– window airbag modules (installed to order), located above the front and rear door windows, under the ceiling trim, and consisting of a folded airbag shell and a gas generator;
– electronic control unit (ECU) with impact sensors (accelerometers), installed under the floor tunnel lining.
The ECU has built-in micromechanical sensors that measure the longitudinal and lateral acceleration/deceleration of the vehicle during a collision. Based on the calculated value, the ECU evaluates the severity of the impact. The ECU compares the values it receives from the frontal impact sensor, side impact sensors and internal electronic sensors. If the deceleration signal due to a frontal (or side) impact exceeds a preset value, the ECU initiates the operation of the seat belt pretensioners and the deployment of the airbags.
If the vehicle's battery is damaged during an accident, the electrical circuit that holds voltage in the ECU will still be able to activate the airbags for some time after the impact;
– front seat belt pretensioners (built into the inertia reels of the front belts) with tension force limiters.
Pretensioners provide timely response to emergency deceleration of the vehicle, pulling the driver and passengers to the seat backs, preventing them from moving forward further by inertia and getting injured from a deployed airbag;
NOTE: The seat belt pretensioner mechanism always deploys before the air bag.
– head restraints installed on the backs of the driver and front passenger seats of all vehicle configurations and on the back of the rear seat. Head restraints prevent damage to the cervical vertebrae of people sitting in the vehicle in the event of a strong impact from behind and when the airbags are deployed.
The front and rear seat head restraints can be adjusted in height by pressing the lock and moving the head restraint up or down to the desired height;
NOTE: The optimal position of the headrest is considered to be one in which its upper edge is level with the top of the head.
For very tall people, raise the head restraint to its highest position; for very short people, lower the head restraint to its lowest position.
- signal lamps of the passive safety system (SRS).
If the ECU detects a system malfunction, the airbag malfunction indicator lamp (with a red light filter) lights up.
WARNING: If the warning light comes on, contact your car service immediately. In addition to possible failure in an emergency, the airbag may unexpectedly deploy while driving, which will lead to serious consequences.
The driver and front passenger seat belt reminder light (with red filter) comes on when the vehicle speed exceeds 10 km/h and stays on for 5 minutes or until the seat belt is fastened. In addition, if the seat belt is not fastened, a warning buzzer comes on simultaneously with the light.
The front passenger airbag off indicator lamp comes on when the airbag is off.
