Removing and installing the front passenger airbag (Mondeo 4)

To avoid injury when removing the front passenger airbag, strictly follow the recommended work sequence.

You will need a 10mm socket head.

1. Disconnect the wire from the negative terminal of the battery.

WARNING: Attempting to remove the air bag module without disconnecting its power supply may result in unexpected air bag deployment.


WARNING: The following airbag removal operations can only be performed after the activator capacitor has been completely discharged. Wait at least 10–15 minutes after disconnecting the wire from the negative terminal of the battery to discharge the capacitor.


WARNING: Do not disassemble the airbag module.


WARNING: Do not allow the air bag module to fall or come into contact with water, grease, or oil.


WARNING: Do not expose the air bag module to temperatures above 95°C.


2. Remove the instrument panel (see Removing and installing the instrument panel). While removing it, disconnect the wiring harness connector from the front passenger airbag.

3. Remove the six airbag mounting nuts…

4….and remove it from the instrument panel studs.

5. If necessary, remove the airbag gasket.

NOTE: When replacing an airbag, purchase a new airbag with the same marking.

6. Install the front passenger airbag in the reverse order of removal.
