The Ford Mondeo uses mainly engines based on four-valve technology with a displacement of 1.8 to 2.5 litres. The power range extends from 66 kW/90 hp (2.0-litre 16V DuraTorg-DI turbodiesel) to 125 kW/170 hp (2.5-litre V6 24V Duratec). All carburettor engines comply with the D4 standard, and both diesels comply with the D3 standard.
1.8-liter 16V Duratec-НЕ – displacement 1798 cm³, power 81 kW (110 hp)/92 kW (125 hp)
Ford supplies the smallest Mondeo power unit in two power variants. In technical terms, both units made of light metals are largely identical: the difference in power is "responsible" for the differently programmed engine control unit - in the age of motor electronics, this is primarily a question of the right chips and bits and "hard magnetic disks". The basic version with 81 kW (110 hp) at 5500 rpm at the power limit acts a little tightly, but in normal driving mode it becomes quite temperamental (maximum torque 165 Nm at 3950 rpm), sufficiently to shake up and support the Mondeo.
There is no question that with 15 additional "horsepower" the Mondeo moves forward faster in the first power stage. And, above all, when in the process of overtaking, the high reserves of revolutions are often tempting. On paper, this is only about 500 rpm.
In practice, the revs are still somewhere in between. However, in the usual traffic chaos, the base engine "mumbles" to itself somewhat more imperceptibly, and its 125 hp rival wants to turn on more often. Although at 170 Nm it offers more torque, the crankshaft, however, rotates 550 rpm faster.

The base engine in the Mondeo is a 1.8-litre four-cylinder producing 81 kW (110 hp), with potential for 92 kW (125 hp).

2.0-liter 16V Duratec-НЕ – displacement 1,999 cm³, power 107 kW (145 hp)
The 2.0-litre 16V Duratec-NE had its baptism of fire in the Mondeo. However, it has long since proven its durability. The power unit, made of light metals, is characterised by stable torque parameters and good rotational capabilities. It develops its maximum power (107 kW, 145 hp) at 6,000 rpm, and the maximum torque (145 Nm) appears at 4,500 rpm.
2.5-liter V6 24V Duratec-НЕ – displacement 2,495 cm³, power 125 kW (170 hp)
The 2.5-liter V6 24V Duratec-NE reaches its maximum output of 125 kW (170 hp) at 6,000 rpm. Its torque curve has – thanks to the air-friendly intake ducts, including the changeover intake manifold – a "wicked character" with two stable power values: around 95% of its muscles are already "playing" the V6 at 2,500 rpm, the maximum torque (220 Nm at 4,250 rpm), after a slight drop in power, is available from 4,500 rpm.
The Mondeo's driving pleasure does not even begin with six cylinders, but in terms of elasticity and passing, the working volume, as before, is the best "medicine". An example is the ST 220: currently, the most powerful Mondeo "was presented by engineers in six pots with approximately 500 cm³ of working volume", which thereby increased the working volume of the V6 24V Duratec-VE to 3 liters. It delivers 162 kW (220 hp) to the crankshaft already at 6000 rpm, its maximum torque is 275 Nm at 4750 rpm.
2.5-liter 16V DuraTorg DI – 1,998 cm³ displacement, 66 kW (90 hp)/85 kW (115 hp)

Debuting in a dual-pack: The 2.0-litre four-cylinder DuraTorg DI with 66 kW (90 hp) or 85 kW (115 hp) represents the latest level of diesel technology.
As an alternative to the carburettor engines, the Mondeo is also equipped with two four-cylinder turbodiesel engines with direct injection and 16-valve cylinder heads. The Mondeo turbodiesels are based on the 2.0-liter DuraTorg engine from the Ford Transit, but they have been thoroughly redesigned in their new workplace. In order to minimize the noise created during combustion, for example, with the help of a pilot injection system. It "gently" heats the combustion chambers by means of an "initial soldering" in order to then effectively ignite the "main course" of diesel fuel by means of an "initial feed".
Situated between the two front wheels of the Mondeo, both diesels stand out for their high torque (245 Nm at 1900 rpm/280 Nm at 1900 rpm), good fuel economy and modern exhaust gas parameters. In the 90 hp engine, a rigid geometry turbocharger running on exhaust gases squeezes fresh air into the cylinders, while in the 115 hp version it "spins" a supercharger with variable blades. In both engines, gas exchange is regulated by a rocker arm with two overhead camshafts. To create the fuel mixture, Ford uses either a pump/nozzle system or Commom-Rail technology; diesel fuel is distributed by a single-plunger distribution injection pump using pin nozzles in the combustion chambers: the 90-horsepower engine uses a Bosch VP 30 pump for this, and the 115-horsepower power unit, respectively, a Bosch VP 44.
