The Ford Mondeo mainly uses engines based on four-valve technology with a displacement of 1.8 to 2.5 liters. The power range extends from 66 kW/90 hp. (2.0 liter 16V DuraTorg-DI turbodiesel) up to 125 kW/170 hp (2.5L V6 24V Duratec). All carbureted engines comply with D4 standards, and both diesel engines comply with D3 standards.

Mondeo's smallest powertrain is available from Ford in two power options. In technical terms, both units made of light metals are largely identical: for the difference in power «answers» a differently programmed engine control unit - in the age of motor electronics, this is primarily a matter of the proper chips and bits and «hard magnetic disks». Basic version with 81 kW (110 HP) at 5500 rpm at the power limit it acts a little tight, but in normal driving mode it becomes quite temperamental (maximum torque 165 Nm at 3950 rpm), to satisfactorily stir and support the Mondeo.

No questions, with 15 extra «horsepower» Mondeo in the first stage of power moves forward more rapidly. And, above all, when, in the process of overtaking, they are often tempted by high reserves of revolutions. On paper, this is about only 500 rpm.

Turnovers in practice are still somewhere in between. Yet in the usual traffic turmoil «mutters» to himself, the base engine is somewhat more inconspicuous, and its 125 hp. the opponent wants to include more often. Although it offers more torque at 170 Nm, the crankshaft turns 550 rpm faster in return.

2.0 liter 16V Duratec-HE - Displacement 1,999 cc3, power 107kW (145 HP)

2.5L V6 24V Duratec-HE - Displacement 2495cc3, Power 125kW (170 HP)


The 2.5L V6 24V Duratec-DOES NOT reach its peak power of 125kW (170 HP) at 6000 rpm. Its torque curve has – thanks to air-friendly intake paths, including the changeover intake manifold – «vicious character» with two stable power levels: about 95% of your muscles «play» already V6 at 2500 rpm, maximum torque (220 Nm at 4250 rpm), after a slight drop in power, is available from 4500 rpm.

Car pleasure does not even start with six cylinders in the Mondeo, however, in terms of elasticity and passage, the displacement is, as before, the best «medicine». ST 220 example: currently the strongest Mondeo «donated by engineers in six pots of approximately 500 cm3 working volume», which brought the working volume of the V6 24V Duratec-VE to 3 liters. 162 kW (220 HP) it delivers already to the crankshaft at 6000 rpm, its maximum torque is 275 Nm at 4750 rpm.

2.5 liter 16V DuraTorg DI - displacement 1998 cc3, power 66kW (90 HP) /85 kW (115 HP)




Double Pack Debut: DuraTorg DI 2-litre four-cylinder with 66kW (90 HP) or 85 kW (115 HP) reflects the state of the art in diesel technology.

As an alternative to carburetted engines, the Mondeo was also armed with two four-cylinder direct-injection turbodiesel engines and 16-valve cylinder heads. Mondeo turbodiesels are based on the 2.0-liter DuraTorg engine from the Ford Transit, but have been extensively redesigned in their new workplace. To minimize the noise generated during the combustion process, for example, using a pilot injection system. In both engines, gas exchange is regulated using a rocker arm with two camshafts located on top. Ford uses either a pump/injector system or Commom-Rail technology to create a fuel mixture, diesel fuel distributes a single-plunger injection pump using pin nozzles in the combustion chambers: a 90-horsepower engine uses a Bosch VP 30 pump for this, and a 115-horsepower power unit respectively Bosch VP 44.
