Below is a brief description of repairs to a partially rusted exhaust system. Most often, the result is only short-term. Bandaging or putty will help for a longer period, but the metal sheet located nearby may also be susceptible to corrosion, so fresh oil stains will soon appear. As already mentioned, the exhaust system, consisting of two or four links, is installed during the production of the car. Therefore, if you need to replace the intermediate muffler, you need to saw the pipe in certain places to insert the new part. This is where problems arise during replacement. The pipe connections in all engines and in all car models are different. In addition, the parts are located in different places. If you decide to replace the exhaust system yourself, we recommend "sawing" the old system after receiving the new parts. The pipe joints are connected during installation using clamps.
The rubber rings of the catalytic converter hanger are made of a special material and can withstand high temperatures.
Although the exhaust system can be easily replaced independently, it is advisable to first visit a service center and find out how much it will cost to replace the entire system or its individual unit, since the cost of work is most often already included in the cost of parts and their purchase may be more expensive. If the exhaust system still has to be dismantled for other work, it is necessary to perform the following steps, and we will immediately note that this description can generally be applied to all cars. To remove the system, perform the following operations:
- lift the front of the car, securely fasten it, preferably on a viewing ditch or lifting platform;
- unscrew the flange of the front outlet pipe from the outlet manifold;
- free the exhaust system parts from the rubber suspension elements and remove them completely;
- unscrew the nuts on the catalytic converter at the flange connection between the front outlet pipe and the converter and separate these parts. Installation is carried out in the reverse order of removal, while paying attention to the following:
- Clean the exhaust manifold flange thoroughly with sandpaper. Lubricate the bolt threads with grease;
- First connect all parts loosely. Insert a new gasket between the neutralizer flange and the front exhaust pipe, as well as the neutralizer and the rear exhaust pipe. The last operation does not have to be performed on all models;
- check all rubber suspensions for reuse;
- align the exhaust system under the car and secure it with rubber mounts;
- connect the exhaust pipe to the manifold and tighten the nuts evenly to a torque of 47 Nm;
- connect the rear muffler to the front link of the system and loosely install the exhaust clamp;
- recheck the position of the front pipe, if necessary the catalytic converter and intermediate muffler and tighten all clamp connections;
- after hanging the rubber rings, check that the exhaust system parts are all hung correctly. Start the engine and listen to the noise. During a short drive, you can quickly determine whether the system is hitting somewhere.
Warning: Do not use sealant in the exhaust system before the catalytic converter as it may ignite.
