The exhaust system installed on the Ford Mondeo was specially designed to remove exhaust gases at all engine speeds without adversely affecting fuel consumption. The system consists of an exhaust manifold, a front exhaust pipe combined with a catalytic converter 2 (Fig. 306), an intermediate muffler 3 and a rear muffler 4. Since January 1997, some changes have been made to the exhaust system of the 16-valve engine, which only affected the design of the system and did not affect the procedure for carrying out repair work. The exhaust system of the V6 engine and engines with a capacity of 200 hp is slightly different. For these engines, among other things, two catalytic converters 1 and 4 (Fig. 307) are installed, one of which is connected to the exhaust manifold, the other is installed in the intermediate muffler 2 (with a pipe). The mufflers are made of a special material coated with aluminum, which significantly increases the service life of individual parts. In addition, the mufflers are lined with sound-absorbing material, which reduces the noise level.

During production, a two- or four-link exhaust system is installed. Repair areas include three, four or six parts. The unit is connected to the exhaust manifold flange at the front, and suspended on rubber loops in the middle and rear.
