The exhaust system fitted to the Ford Mondeo has been specifically designed to evacuate exhaust gases at all engine speeds without adversely affecting fuel consumption. The system consists of an exhaust manifold combined with catalytic converter 2 (pic. 306) front exhaust pipe, intermediate muffler 3 and rear muffler 4. Since January 1997, some changes have been made to the exhaust system of the 16-valve engine, which affected only the design of the system and did not affect the order of repair work. The exhaust system of the V6 engine and 200 hp engines is somewhat different. For these engines, among other things, two catalytic converters 1 and 4 are installed (pic. 307), one of which is connected to the exhaust manifold, the other is installed in the intermediate muffler 2 (with tube). Silencers are made of a special material coated with aluminium, which significantly increases the service life of individual parts. In addition, the mufflers are lined with sound-absorbing material, which reduces the noise level.

During the production process, a two- or four-link exhaust system is installed. Repair zones include three, four or six parts. In front, the unit is connected to the exhaust manifold flange, and in the middle and behind it is suspended on rubber loops.
